Where to find good exhaust pipes
 

Just tried to put my MAC"S (prob should not have bought but always expecting proper fit as advertised) exhaust pipe from header to muffler on and the flange (for one thing) is too big and close not allowing the nuts to easily go on the studs. Any one know where to get exhaust stuff that actually goes on correctly and fits correctly?

On the right side? I think I know what you mean. I got a macs header pipe laying around someone gave me. It has a macs sticker on it I think for a 46-48 ford. Were the pipe turns and meets the manifold flange it runs full size into the flange. The original necked down. Im sure its done for manufacturing expense.

Go to a good muffler shop and have one custom fit.

A better fit would be to find new old stock or old stock from napa ect or pay someone that can build you a good set up. Years ago I bought a bendpak exhaust pipe machine and make all my own stuff. But buying all the equipment is more then paying someone that know how to do it correctly . That doesnt mean every muffler shop in town can do it. Some just make it work and others make it look like it belongs there

Yep, what you'd received is pretty much what all the repop stores sell. And yep, none of them fit correctly.
I locate NOS pipes for my restorations but must admit, they are getting tougher and tougher to find.
Second to that is what Skidmarks has recommended... having a QUALITY muffler shop make you pipes.

You guys are right, I have the bending, welding, etc but time is also precious and wanted to avoid "IF YOU WANT IT DONE RIGHT, DO IT YOURSELF" phase. LOL

You might want to do a search for company: Waldron Exhaust, they offer pipes in steel and stainless.

There's fit like all the others... poopy.
A long time ago, he had a mass of NORS pipes for these cars. Not any lonegr unfortunately.

At our shop we stopped installing exhaust parts years ago. We have a very good muffler shop nearby, and they make up all pipes to fit. The overall cost is less than trying to make a "ready made" set actually fit. For my own cars, I have the tailpipes made of stainless. Not much more expensive, but almost never need to be replaced, a good deal for lightly driven vehicles.

I always send folks for pipes to "Red's Headers". Their pipes always fit, even left side pipes are spot on!! They just don't sell stainless.

I had luck with Waldron on my 36 Ford. The cross over part didn't fit and I had to have a local shop make it fit. Then I sent the modified cross over part back and they made another one in stainless and charged just for materials. The rest of the parts fit fine. I'd give them an 8 out of 10. But who would do better?

Not the front pipes for 39 - 40. They don't (fit).

Well, this type of thread comes up frequently (where can I get pipes for my car?). Many recommend Red's and other suppliers. Then come the replies that they don't fit.
Many recommend what I do....find a good muffler shop and let them build your system. Most of these guys are great and reasonable. No waiting and no shipping cost. If you buy from vendors and they don't fit, then what? Ship them back? Rework to make fit? Put them on the shelf and go to a muffler shop? JMO

I got a set of Red's headers for my 49 Mercury and they bolted right in. Only issue was that I had to wait weeks for Red's to manufacture them. I took the car over to a local muffler shop that knows what they are doing (Ed Hansen's in Spring Valley, Ca.) and they did a really nice installation of dual pipes.
I've purchased headers directly from Sanderson before, and the headers didn't fit (not their fault), and they took them back. No issues. I was only out the shipping cost. I'd do business with them again too.

Straight pipes. Black pipe, tees, elbows, unions & no mufflers all the way! 8^)

I was fortunate enough to fine an "old" non franchised muffler shop where the old hot rodder was excited to do the project.That is what I would recommend also .
It's always great to see the guys eyes light up when you share your need and not just give you a deer in the headlights stare. A lot of people can bend and weld pipe, but only a few can "build the sweet exhaust system" I am sure you are looking for.

I bought some U bends and straight pipes and made my owen exhaust including a H pipe for my 46 Mercury 1/2 ton pick up
