Zenith or TillotsonCarb???

I need to change the Maze filter so what shows me which carb I have? Are there distinctive markings? Does that filter normally get gas into it?

31 Model A,

Zenith Carb is Cast Iron and is usually Black in Color, Tillotson is made of Pot Metal and is normally unpainted.

I would try running the car without the Air Maze and see how you like it, I feel like they are a fire hazard and do not use them. Many others disagree.

Check out Ebay and search under "Model A Ford Carburetor". You'll see MANY different kinds and will likely find yours.

And if it's not a Tillotson it could be a Marvel. It's also made of pot metal.

I had a air maze on my sport coupe, it stalled in traffic one day, the culprit was smoke from the fire in the air maze choking the engine. I won't use one!

Re: Zenith or TillotsonCarb???

I don't use an air maze or any air filter on my model A's , they cause more problems than they ever solve. They have a choking effect on any updraft carb and cause the spark plugs to run black and sooty. The engine will often run so rich that gas will collect in the muffler and oil pan. The ones with a paper filter are a real fire hazard when they become wet with gas.

A cast iron Zenith was the original carburetor that came on the model A from the factory. The pot metal or alloy replacement carburetors have a different expansion rate than cast iron and will sooner or later warp and develope vacume leaks.

I'm not a happy camper, dropped my camera on the fender and now I have two small paint chips to deal with.

I see one thing you need to look at now. The rust streak on the fan blade could mean that the blade is loose or cracked. Inspect it before you drive the car. If the fan slings a blade it's bad news. In fact if that is indeed a rust streak I would replace the fan.

I don't see any. Wipe the blades and all looks OK.
