Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? I have not seen any yokes reproduced or very many NOS for sale. Once in awhile a run of gears is made and many vendors will carry them for a year or two. Have not seen them for sale for a couple of years, but have not really been looking. Rod

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Bratton's carries the gears but the yoke they ride on is not reproduced.

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Ebay/craigslist/swapmeet.

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Is the part where the ring gear bolts to OK? If so, you might be able to find a good used set that would fit inside the two halves of the carrier.

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? I'd be inclined to look for a whole rear end and change it out. I'm cheap and lazy. Maybe a fool too. Around these parts they pop up and are very reasonable.
Hot rodders will sometimes practically give them away. You might put in your profile where you live. Model A folks are very generous and like helping out fellow enthusiasts. If I had them I'd give 'em to you, if you were near by.... |
Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? In the Ford Parts Price List by Ford Motor Company, the differential spider is part A-4211 (some call it a yoke ) and the three gears are part A-4215 differential pinion gear (some call them spider gears). The gears are listed in reproduction in Snyder's catalog under part number A-4215 at $125 for a set of three. You would have to check with them to see if they are in stock of course. I have several A-4211 spiders in good used condition and a set of NOS A-4215 gears but will not have access to my computer, after today, for several days so go with another source if you are in a rush.

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Spider gears in a Model A rear axle assembly receive little wear as they are stationary until you turn a corner. Most any you find are serviceable. In 1931 Ford started drilling oil holes in the three gears. I don't think this was necessary. What probably happened is that Ford engineers took apart rear axle assemblies from junked out cars and found the three headed yoke scored due to lack of lubrication. More than likely the cause was a leaky banjo run dry.
A set of spider gears are worth next to nothing. I would certainly not pay $125 for them. You see them all the time in junk boxes at swap meets. Tom Endy |
Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Except for the 1931 with oil holes, Model T's spider gears are the same. Check the T parts suppliers for the gears. The spider from my understanding is harder then heck and wears very little. The diffy case on the other hand does wear from the gear riding on it.

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Gee, you guys have it easy. I've been looking around for years for a rebuildable rear end - nothing worth a second look. A half decent carrier (Yoke) is like rocking horse $H1T, let alone gears and axles etc. I haven't seen any rear ends/parts at a swap meet for years over here.
Trouble is, it costs a fortune to get anything from US to OZ although I have found a way of getting them here by surface freight from LA. It takes a few weeks but only a fraction of the cost of sending them by post and the size doesn't matter too much. |
Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? The gear teeth are good, it just seems to me the are really loose on the yoke. I don't know what the clearance between the gears and yoke should be. Thanks, Tom

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Barnstuff, I am not in a big rush but would be interested in purchasing the yoke and gears. Thanks, Tom

Loose is normal. Tom Endy |
Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? I agree with Tom, the gears are a fairly loose fit and any you find will probably disappoint you if you expect them to be a tight fit. I also agree that the gears don't get much wear and I have never found a set that I wouldn't use.

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Bert's Model A Store , probably has what you need.

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? Was your rear end noisy? save your money don't just replace gears unless broken or pitted. The spiders are supposed to be loose. Just replace all the bearings, seals and gaskets and readjust it. That will cost you about $300+. It will run another 80 years.

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? I want to thank all you guys for the feedback. I reevaluated my gears now and have found some others to compare to. I thinks I'm in good shape. Thanks again, Tom

Re: Where can I purchase new spider and spider gears for the model A? I have some NOS Spider Gears for the "A". I have several left, after advertising them here on FORDBARN, a while ago. They would be the same price as I advertised them, before. I'll have to look it up.
They are Genuine FORD NOS gears. Thank you, MIKE :) (mikeburch) |
