New engine rebuild started
 

Today I started the engine Joe Siril rebuilt for me down in Turlock Calif... it started on third crank..and yes it did die..who know due to what?? Carb..Distributor... but I got it going again and drove car around block... big step since this car is total ground up restoration and has not moved since 1958... this does not mean it is nearly finished.. not by long means.. but one big step along a long journey...

congratulation on your progress. Yes starting the engine for the first time after a rebuild is a big thing.

can you tell me how to start the engine for the first time since overhaul.
what first start oil, should the engine idle for 1 hour, and then let the engine cool off?. before i drive it careful around on country roads.

i will start my rebuilt ford model a 1929 pickup engine soon this Winter.

The engine shouldn't require any special running instructions. Start it let it warm up for a few minutes and then run it around the block for a few miles and check the head nut torque. The head nuts will loosen up as you drive it for the first several miles as the head gasket compresses from the heat. Don't push the engine to much under load until the head nuts stop loosing torque so you don't blow the gasket. After they settle you are all set. I would run whatever oil the rebuilder recommends and change it after 500 miles. I like to first fill the engine with at least a quart of oil through the distributor hole in the engine head. The engine does not need to wear in to operate properly if it is machined correctly.

I have close to 4000 miles on my rebuild from Joe, and it still runs fantastic. Mine is in a 1931 Tudor sedan. Sure has plenty of power and never dies.

Hi Norway! The engine should be started on Mineral oil and run for a few hours. The oil should then be changed to a normal 10/40 or 10/30. The engine should be accelerated a few times. I don't believe in idling too long .Once it's hot, Retorque the head. We use 55lbs here. I do not know how much that is with the metric system (About 25 Kilos?) when it cools down, retorque it again.
