ID these Merc Truck hubcaps? 1 Attachment(s)
I've had this set of Mercury truck hubcaps for awhile but was never sure what year they are. Are they '52? Can anyone ID them for me? Thanks.

Re: ID these Merc Truck hubcaps? They look late 40s to me but im not certain, they are beautiful non the less!

Re: ID these Merc Truck hubcaps? I'll have to check the old 49 Merc truck to see if it has any caps left on it. Might be a match.

The Profile of this Mercury Hubcap is exactly the same as the regular 1941 Ford Hubcap, however, I doubt that Ford of Canada branded any of their trucks Mercury before the War. It is also different to the standard 41 Mercury Hubcap. There is a lot of mixing & matching of Ford & Mercury Hubcaps through the years. Take the 1963/1964 Ford HiPo Galaxies with the 15" wheels for example. The standard Fords of 1963/1964 came with 14" wheels, but when a 15" wheel was required, Ford looked into their Spare Parts Bin & located some 1956 Mercury 15" Full Wheel Covers that they added a Spinner to, & that is what they used. Chances this Hubcap could have been standard on the late 40's early 50's Mercury Pickup.
Compare the Mercury Hubcap with the photo of a standard 1941 Ford Hubcap, & you will see that the Profile is similar. |
Re: ID these Merc Truck hubcaps? Looks like a 48-52 to me. But I haven't seen many.

Re: ID these Merc Truck hubcaps? These caps are shown in the '46 Ford Canada chassis catalog on the '46 Merc 1/2 ton, a similar cap, but much larger, was on the 1 Ton. ..B.

Re: ID these Merc Truck hubcaps? They are not 46-48 USA built Mercury hubcaps. There is a set of those for sale on the swap page and I have a friend with a 48 Mercury sedan.

Be interesting to see how 49 Merc Serial # fits in that Canadian SN listing. Is this a 1/2 T pickup? Started in 1946 ? Were there Mercury large trucks or only Ford? Gene Tulsa |
Re: ID these Merc Truck hubcaps? The cap in question is the regular Mercury stainless cap used on all 1946-1956 Mercury 1/2 ton trucks (made in Canada only). The Mercury trucks 3/4 ton and up used a stainless cap that was much larger but with the same logo. After '56 a similar cap was used on the 1/2 tons, , but was chrome plated steel, not stainless. They do have the same profile as the '41 car caps, but due to the small market, will never be reproduced. I've restored several sets of these, and am always looking to buy singles or sets to restore. Here is an example of a restored '46-'56 Mercury stainless truck cap. I use a vinyl transfer for the script. Bruce

Re: ID these Merc Truck hubcaps? Thanks Detonator , yes, they are usually tough as they all came off trucks that were willingly abused especially in their later years. As long as there are no holes in them and if the script area is not too bad I can usually save them. On average, I'd probably spend 8 hours on one cap. Cheers : Bruce
