Brand new go easy

Hi all I'm Jim Glass from NJ. Picking up a 1929 Model A on Saturday from a lady who is 82 and has owned it since she was 10. It's not as good AS IT SOUNDS. She drove it on a farm when she was a kid, painted it with a brush at 16 and the chrome is all painted silver. Good news...it runs and was maintained because she LOVES IT. She recently still drove it in parades etc.

So here I'll be now with you guys and gals seeking Model A advice. I'm a Studebaker guy. I have a Hawk I've owned for 40 years and have been actively involved Studebakers all my adult life. Looking forward to this car as my wife grew up with nothing Fords. I'm told this is a Roadster and it has a rumble seat. I'll get some pics ASAP. Looking forward to this forum. I've read it over for some time and you seem great (just like Stude people!).

Thanks for the welcome. I'm in Middletown 07748. Central area. I tried to post a picture but I got the following:
Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing.

If this occurred unexpectedly, please inform the administrator and describe the action you performed before you received this error.

I used the paper clip and it did go to my files, and looked like things were on my side until that message. Maybe because I'm new??

Think positive, it is better to have the bumpers painted than rusty with pits. Good luck with your car. There is a lot of information on this site.

Welcome!!!

If it drives, go over the mechanical s, brakes and the like. Tune it up, change the fluids, using anything you would use for a modern car. Grease it up, put a blanket on the seats and drive the piss out it. What a story to tell about the patina when someone asks.

Welcome to the site. I'm also new as I bought a 1928 Model A Roadster Pick up last August. This is the right place to be for Help, Advice and to share all of the Knowledge about the Ford Model A's.

When you take it to be lubed take a lube chart with you. There are a couple of points a modern guy would miss. The generator, the distributor, the mechanical brake linkage, and the throttle shaft that runs behind the engine are easy to miss if you don't expect them. The lube fitting on the rear end just takes a little, too much and it will get on the brakes. Too much on the water pump lube fitting and you will get it into the water and the grease will block the radiator.

Welcome, and looking forward to the pictures of the 29 Roadster. Owning a Model A for 72 years must be near a record.

Hardtimes, yep, and there are a few more Stude guys on here that I know of. 53 is one of my favorites also. It had a style that still looks modern and is very areodynamic. I still have the 1950 Commander I bought in 1969, so I have a ways to go to match the lady with the Model A.

First up - Welcome
Drive it repaired - not restored. They're only original ONCE!

It is more fun to get a lube chart and do the lube work yourself, then you will get more intimate with your new purchase.

Charlie is right, sometimes when someone slathers paint all over a car it can help stop the rust process. I would rather have a coating of garbage paint than rust. Good luck and post pictures.

There is a new guy in our club that just bought a 1930 Blindback. It was covered with primer paint, and he has carefully been removing the primer to expose the original paint. He's been doing an excellent job of removing the paint, and the original paint under the primer looks so nice that I don't know why someone painted over it. I'd like to remove the paint on my 28 and 29 to see what the original paint looks like, but haven't had the time yet. Also once I remove the paint I should be prepared for a repaint, just in case the original paint is bad.
