what oil to use to clean up motor

I have a 1933 model B engine that has not run for 20 years,
Dropped the pan, not too dirty. What To change the new oil many many times but want it to clean engine. What would you use?

any good detergent oil will clean engine, just don't buy the oil that has the seal on the container that says for gasoline engines, that oil is for modern engines with roller tappets , no zinc in it, zinc is needed for flat tappet cams on the older engines

The synthetic oils like Mobil 1 are promoted as engine cleaners....
Are there bad for old engines like mine?

We recommend Shell Rotella oil. It is designed for diesel use. If you don't have a filter, change it after periods of a couple of hundred miles. It won't get it all, of course, but loose deposits will be drained. Scooping sludge out of the pan is a good start. Detergent oil is designed to keep crud in suspension so it can be drained, instead of settling out. Usually, an engine that has not been run for two decades will have plenty of problems, anyway.

Thanks and I really appreciate you putting the Cabash on it.
My motor has 43k miles on it, it was garaged all its life!

Frank, this is really a bad idea. Use straight weight oil until you decide to rebuild it. Don't disturb any deposits or they may end up clogging your bearings.

A few people here have written that this is an old folk tale. Is it?

The chunks of sludge that get through the pickup screen are going through the oil pump and straight to the bearings. A lucky person better pray the pump grinds those chunks finer than the bearing clearance. Feeling lucky?

so if it were yours you would not try to start it before you rebuild it?

I have always been a believer in Texaco's Havoline Oil since I worked at one of their service stations as a kid. Today I use nothing else. My van had roughly 250,000 miles on it when the drain plug hole wore out in the aluminum crankacase. When the oil pan was removed there was absolutely no sludge anywhere to be seen. The van now has over 294,000 miles and going strong.

I know other oils have improved over the years. But I still use Havoline in all of my vehicles. I believe if you use a good detergent oil and change often, it will clean the sludge out of your engine eventually.

well, like a good suit in the 30's that came with two pants this car came with 2 engines. One original, in the car and one rebuilt 1935 model I have on a stand.

That Havoline sounds like a great oil. I must use some!

Agree with Shadetree. Using only Havoline oil in an engine for twenty years will keep the inside clean. Over 50 years ago when detergent oil came out the opinion was " don't use detergent oil in an engine that had used 30 or 40 weight". After a rebuild it would be okay.

Re: what oil to use to clean up motor

You can clean the pan and valve chamber of sludge and debris and use detergent oil without rebuilding first.

Thanks for all your suggestions....
I will run regular motor oil with MMO and keep changing the oil until it looks clean.
