Looks to be a Modern Riley overhead conversion on an A engine that had previously thrown a rod through the block.

The block is a 'B' ((1932-'34). Charlie Yapp is the guru of 'Secrets of Speed Society' and had been making reproduction OHV (Overhead Valve) heads for some time now. I don't know how well his product performs.

In my earlier days I had both a Cragar (still have a few 'bits and pieces') and a Miller-Schoffield OHV head for my Model '34 B engine. The Riley's (both two port and four port) were the main competitors to the Cragars. These things are NOT for the faint of heart, in both time, money and frustration.

Great for parts head alone is worth a few Gs if it was not damaged when the bottom end blew apart

Yes it is a B block. We have no knowledge what is inside or weather it is new or used. I have one of Charlie Yapp's repop Riley heads myself. We would need the serial number from the head to determine where is the run it was made. Later Yapp heads had more improvements made on them.

Wonder if any read what you wrote ?
Or if any , who bid, looked at the pics :confused: I see the same thing that you see,eh...namely the BIG chunk out the side of the B block, that is welded. That could explain why for sale ? When spending over 4K , so far, for unknown head, do you think that someone would ask the guy to take pan off and show bottom end ? Easy to do, but people seem to have LOTS of $.

FWIW....I asked the seller to remove pan and look/see with pics for bidders sake. Ten minute job....Refused !!

is it my eyes or is their a crack forming from the weld back to the bell housing ?

That and the repairer block (why not swap it out for another block ??)tell me it may have been repaired on the cheap So it only parts to me and over 4K for the parts I can see ???

Offer him $2,000 - and gamble that you don't lose on the deal. Hopefully he will refuse and you will be the winner !

I just ( 10:30 am, Tues. Sept. 23, '14) checked the ebay posting and see that the seller was quite fortunate and a buyer quite unfortunate, in the 'winning' bid of $4,100.
