Model A Engine froze

After setting up for a couple of months my Model A engine has froze up. When I last drove it I thought it was fine. When I say froze it will not start and even when I pull it and engage clutch the wheels still wont turn. Anyone got any ideas. Thanks, Joe Bohannon.

I thought I had a bad starter so i bought a rebuilt one it tries to turn it but cannot. The only thing I did different the last drive was to not cut the gas valve to off position.

Setting a few months after operating an engine will not cause it to get stuck. remove the plugs and take a look, spray some lube in & then try to turn it over with the plugs out.

My guess is a cylinder full of water but other guesses are equally valid. Have you removed the plugs and tried turning it? Pulling (I assume you mean with a car) it and engaging the clutch is a good way to bend a rod.

I have all plugs out and see no water. i have put in some lubricant. Still stuck.

Take the starter off and see if you can turn the engine with the crank. If you use a bolt for the starter that is too long you can jam it into the flywheel and lock things up. This also eliminates the possibility of a jammed Bendix gear.

Hey J,
How long ago was it that you started engine and for how long run ?
Have you checked the dip stick to see what it shows, i.e.- oil, NO oil, water in oil, lots of water. Was there water in engine(checked) last time you started engine? Have to do process of elimination...from afar,eh ! So, what I would start with investigation if there. WHAT condition is battery and connections ? Is clutch disengaging ?

BTW..leaving gas valve on, as you state, is not liable to stop an engine from turning over. However, an engine without sufficient oil and water when run....can overheat and seize. Broken/bent engine internals will prevent turn over. Tell us condition of engine, if known, rebuilt, original, untouched...what ???

Pushing the clutch in would disconnect the tranny, wouldn't it?

Remove the bolts from the starter OR back them out 2-3 turns and see if it will turn over with the hand crank. FWIW

Some one could have dropped a wishbone bolt in the housing and it finally
worked it's way to the flywheel.

1931 Flamingo. "It worked" I took out the top 2 bolts of starter and it turns over just fine. It appears the end of at least one of the bolts has been rubbing against flywheel. Do you think I have done anymore damage. What caused this ? Thanks everyone for input. Joe Bohannon
