raising rear

Car 1939 Deluxe

I would like my rear to be raised about 4-6 inches - Would like to achieve by something simple. Would putting in new shocks do it?

If yes any recommendations?

No on the shocks, think springs or blocks. Gary

When I had my '32 coupe I put a solid block above the rear spring leaves and longer u-bolts.

Re: raising rear

Your not going to get 4-6 inches, but maybe an inch or two with what 1931 flamingo says, a block over the spring and longer u-bolts. Maybe re-arc the spring for a little more, that's about it for the easy stuff. Might try a different spring with more arc?

30-9 Please post a photo of what your car looks like now AND also a photo of what the rear suspension looks like now. I request this because stock 39 fords didn't sit very low so your 4 to 6 inches seems like an awful lot of lift.

Re: raising rear

sounds like you might have lowering shackles ,a picture would help

Re: raising rear

i agree with oldskool on this are your springs dearched and the shackles up side down that would put the rear pretty low. flip the shackles and maybe air shocks if needed if springs are good you shouldnt need the air shocks.

Why go higher?

Re: raising rear

I did a couple back in the dark ages.
Use either a model A spring or a model T spring.
This was a common fix when putting a quickchange in.

Gentlemen - thanks for all the advise. I'm almost as old as the car ")and don't own a smart phone, so can't take pic. I just like the look with the car slightly higher in rear and was looking for a simple way to achieve. Sounds like not so simple

Re: raising rear

Do you know if the car is at stock ride height? Can you count the number of leafs in the rear spring? What is the measurement between the shackle pins on the rear spring? This info. might help.

Re: raising rear

Yes get some pictures under there, I would be looking for a spring from a 40 / 41.. two door or fordor sedan, I thing there are one or two more leafs, than your original 39 coupe ??... The change out of the spring is not an easy trick, need a good jack, jack stands, a good spring spreader, a hand full of tools , and sometimes a "band-ad" or two. and did I say beer, for your helper ?? I admire your going UP and not down,,, yes the right way to go. for a better ride, and looks good too...IF it were me I would rebuild,( re-ark ) your original spring and maybe add a leaf or two ... but thats just me ....OLD.....BILL

However you do it, be sure you do not lose a reasonable degree of caster. When I was dumber I lost a '57 ----ee that way.

Re: raising rear

30-9, My original spring pack has 9 springs.
Some want the stock 39 spring height lower. A photo of your spring set-up, would help solve your problem.
I have a 9 spring pack, reverse eye main spring with 2 of the original top springs below the main spring.
