B-7 generator

My 31 coupe has a model B engine that the previous owner partially converted to 12 volt. The generator looks like a Model A generator but has two wires comming from the hole where the original had a post. One small wire is grounded and the other is from the field brush. It is stamped B-7 on the case. What do I have? Is it 12 volt?

One wire should be the ground wire for the field and the other wire should be the output wire coming from the insulated output brush.

This and the original Model A generators will charge a 12 volt battery by simply installing a 12 volt battery. If your end plate has cooling holes then it should be good for a few more amps than the Model A generator.

I do not know since the motor has not been run yet. Is this a rebuilt Model A generator or maybe a 12 volt 1932 or later generator? Anybody know?

A picture would help.

It sounds like the common post Model A production generator that came on 1932 and later Fords with a 4 cylinder engine. Most have an aluminum rear end plate with cooling holes. Just determine which wire is the field ground and secure it under the cutout mounting screw, then the other wire goes to the cutout input. I see a lot of these used on Model A's.

Re: B-7 generator

A generators originally have a date code stamped on the coverband ---letter for year, number for month, K-1930, L-1931, R 1935
on V8 generator it is stamped on the housing, usually Ford script with the date code under it or part of the same line
your "B7" doesn't seem to fit as original Ford date code, but it could be a rebuilders code( I used to stamp all my rebuilds, I usede letter for month, number for year, B7 for me would mean feb of a year ending in 7)

B7 could be 1957. Possibly off of a Ford tractor. Rod
