Points problem
 

Hi, funny thing happened on way home from a car show. A started running poorly then back fired, loud, twice and died. It appears that the copper band of the points wore and shorted out on the cam to the point where as the band snapped. These were very new points only in the car for two weeks. So I have two a's, I put new points in, and then compared the points with my other A. The copper band on the new points come very close to the lobe on the cam. About 19 thousands clearance. The old points have much more clearance is this normal should I complain to the supplier? Thanks for your help.

I've seen the same thing on repro points. I bend the copper strap so it has good clearance from the points cam. You might have to pinch the copper near the sharp curve to help eliminate the looseness.

Yep, same thing happened to me. So I also pinch the copper strap to position it away from the cam lobes. Simple fix.

They are either from Snyders or a local small Suplier here on Cape Cod. Am I to understand that I can obtain both, repos or originals? Thanks

As 1930 coupe I also use the original style points from Brattons and Snyders. I'm still running the same original style points from Brattons in my 31 tudor after over 14 years. There have been plenty warnings about the make shift repro V8 points. What can you really expect ???

I like cleaning up original point when I can, but if buying new, I always get the ones from NAPA, and have been very happy with them.

First question, why did you change the points in the first place?

I have a pile of used old points I pulled off of old distributers I have. Most I would have no problems with putting on a very well restored car and expect to get decades of use out of them.

An old quality set of points and a high quality cam should be install once and let your great grandchildren worry about replacing them.

My car is getting new points only becuase I picked up a set of NOS 40's vintage Ford points for $5 at one point.

Hi Kevin, I had trouble with the pads ( of the points ) wearing out so I purchased new cams from Stipe Machine. And I'm happy to say to anyone reading they are fantastic, problem solved. Recently we were chasing a backfiring problem so we changed the points, just to see if it would help. Thanks for all the advice.

Old school thought on tune ups, replace all the parts.
