Alternative to standard Model A stone guard
 

I am not overly keen on the look of the standard stone guard that can be bought. I am chasing ideas on how to make a different style stone guard. Ideally I just want one that fills the hole in the radiator shell, rather than cover the entire shell as the standard stone guard does.

Feel free to post any ideas, including how to mount or fix the guard in place.Pictures also appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Can you put a square of hardware cloth between the radiator shell and the radiator proper? It could be attached with small diameter "through bolts" all the way through to the backside of the radiator - and that might be covered by the shell?

I think hardware cloth is available in stainless steel - but pricey.

I don't think anything that close to the radiator will do much to stop the "stones" from damaging it. It needs the space to deflect when hit. Some sort of stand off might do it?

This is a piece of stainless steel shaker screen that's been polished with a 1/4" rod edge.

Page 111 and more enclusive, page 339, of 'Sacramento Vintage Ford' catalog may have what you want. However what they offer is a 'Bug Screen' rather than a 'Stone Guard'. Their Model A Raditator BUG SCREEN is of black nylon mesh with sewn edges and custom wire clips to secure. It covers only the radiator, not the shell, which is what you are looking for. They make both '28-'29 and '30-'31 style. $60.

Also on that page you will find items that both protect and change the look of your Modle A : Fender Masks, Fender Bras, as well as Model A Grille & Apron Masks.

The photo of the hot rod with guard is just like I run on my '29 pickup except I painted mine black, it almost disappears. Made small screw clips to attack to inner edge of shell. Plan on same set up for my '30 cabriolet.

I really like the look of my stainless rock guard but it would be easy to buy the weight of stainless hardware cloth you want and install it under the radiator shell. Even the lightweight cloth would sure deflect a pretty good rock or debris. Iern my modern car I had a rock break my plastic grill recently, would have really caused some trouble if it would have hit an unprotected A radiator... Here is some offered on Ebay that you can have custom cut to your dimensions. (search this ebay number 261423161014)

big box hardware stores sell alum perforated sheets, used to cover house radiators.might be a cheap fix
