The 1st is Henry looking over job 1 - the first V-8.
Number 2 is Henry on the right and Orville Wright on the left. Probably taken during the dedication of the Wright Bicycle Shop in Greenfield Village.
Isn't ironic that in June of 2003 Ford Motor Company celebrated their 100th anniversary and in December of 2003 was the 100th anniversary of the Wright Bros first flight.

By the way, I attended both.

Here's another famous Ford photo, and one that is a little easier than what was in Post #1. Who's that with Ford, and what year was it taken?

Henry Ford and the other builders of “999” were afraid to drive their own brutish machine, so they hired a fearless professional bicycle racer named Barney Oldfield. Although he had never driven a car, Oldfield not only mastered it but also won his first race and went on to become America’s first nationally known racing hero. With his trademark cigar and aggressive driving, Oldfield was the terror of dusty dirt ovals across the country.

Oldfield recalled the old days with Henry Ford on this photo of Oldfield driving a (unreadable) to a 1909 track record in Los Angeles.

Under the cartoon: Oldfield’s name became synonymous with speed in cartoons and jokes.

Under the poster: Oldfield built a career from his first race in Ford’s “999.” Then, as now, durable tires were a key to victory and Firestone sponsored his efforts. This poster features many of Oldfield’s rides prior to 1910, including “999” at top left.

Top right photo caption: People expected race drivers to be daredevils. Oldfield obliged, often participating in exhibition races that set cars against trains or even airplanes. This race pitted Oldfield against the famous aviator Lincoln Beachey.

I think Ford might be asking the gentleman this question- "Who do you think you are? Barney Oldfield?" The year would have been 1903.

If you take the time to look at the bigger image, you can easily see the running order and lap number. It looks like Mile 450, and #34 is in first with #6 in second.

The complete photo of Orville Wright & Henry Ford. Men always seemed to be dressed up so nice no matter what the occasion, sporting fedoras, double-breasted overcoats, clean white shirts, ties, perfectly ironed pants and lets not forget the shinned shoes! What happen to us or we no longer care?

It's a lazy, casual society now. Look at the craftsmanship in that porch floor, how the boards curve around the corner. You won't find that done anymore either.

I wonder how many engines Ford tested, before he put them in production. Did he make the first AV8 swap? History says, the first V8's were very un- reliable and the dealers changed quite a few before the bugs were worked out. Have to give him credit, he had allot of perseverance.
