Manual windshield wiper?

Hi, I'd like to install a manual windshield wiper on my Pickup and probably just temporarily. Will I be getting myself in any kind of trouble ( like the size of the hole as there is no hole at this time ) down the road should I convert to either electric or vacuum wiper? Thanks for the help.

What year? CCPU or OCPU?

Re: Manual windshield wiper?

The windshield on a CCPU (assuming it has a correct windshield) is different than a passenger car. A pickup, at least 28's, 29's and at least half of 1930, has tube riveted into the windshield top channel to house the wiper shaft. Like Dudley said above, you need to state what year and style your pickup is.

My april 1930 AA used the manual hand wiper . The windshields that used the hand wiper used a different top frame with a tube that the wiper installed through as Rusty says.

Re: Manual windshield wiper?

Hi, the pickup is a 1931 closed cab. There is a hole or slot, in the shape of an inverted or upside down U in what I would describe as part of the cab. This truck was in very bad shape 3 years ago and I'd like say that I saved her life. However I had help doing it right in my garage. As long as I own her she will never be a show piece, but she is beautiful. Thanks for help. You should know I've spent about as much as I can at this time, choke choke.gotta go make some more dough!

My late 31 CCPU (Budd Cab) had a manual wiper on it when I bought it (and still does). Has that same inverted U as Gino described.

Based on other things I have found on this PU, it's more than likely NOT what was on it when new, but whatever was handy when it was "restored" 25 years ago by a previous owner.

The hand wiper works as good or sometimes better that the vacume wiper. The one that I had above, the hand wiper installed in the upper windshield frame, through a tube. If the wiper installs through the panel above the windshield, it won't be possible to let the windshield out. The arm on the hand wiper isn't spring loaded like the other wiper arms.

Clean it really, really good and then wipe it down with Rain X. Done.

Check with Burt's in Colorado for the correct parts you need. They were able to help me out with my 29 wiper. They have very reasonable prices also. Ed Saniewski

Thanks very much. I'll try the Rain X first, if need be, I'll contact the folks at Berts.

This true. The hand wiper relies on the tension that the springyness of the arm alone brings to the equation.

BUT - the wiper arms designed for vacuum or electric wipers DO have a springyness quotient all by themselves - by design - and do allow motion of the windshield in lesser (or greater) amounts (depending on your spring.)

I'll attach a pix?

The part to the right houses a collar (that engages a groove in the wiper motor shaft,) and the 90 degree bent rod (engages a hole in the wiper shaft) and the all important for this application spring (which keeps everything together - and the wiper blade pushed against the windshield.)

You'll obviously need some sort of manual substitute for the wiper motor.

I did exactly this on my 29CC truck for a while. Used the existing windshield hole and used (first) a vacuum wiper motor (didn't work so well) and later a J.C. Whitney $7.99 6v electric wiper motor. (worked MUCH better)

Now I'm back to the aftermarket hand wiper emulative of restoration. (They're not EXACT copies of the original - but true to the spirit.)

The RainX really will work. I have a 28 pickup with a manual wiper that I never touch. The windshield is treated with RainX and that is all I have ever needed.

RainX will be a must do. I think I'll purchase the manual wiper too. Im sure it will put a smile on many a face!
