Calling all Smith Air Compressor fans 4 Attachment(s)
The Gordon Smith air compressor was built in Bowing Green KY starting in 1932. Production of Smith converted Model A cowl units continued at least to 1948, and using Smith's own sheetmetal with Model A power until 1953. Smith used a special head which allowed the 2 inner cylinders to pump air while the outer 2 powered the unit.
Lots of these units are still around, in use and in storage. The Model A Restorer's Club chartered the Smith Motor Compressor Region in 2010. Membership is $10 per year, including a quarterly newsletter with lots of great information. If you have a Smith or are interested in the compressors we would like to have you as a member. Here is Carlen Pippen's Smith Compressor display at French Lick. On the left is a Smith built Model A cowl model from 1942 and on the right is a Smith Sheetmetal Model A built in 1949.

Re: Calling all Smith Air Compressor fans I moved from Northern New York to Bowling Green, KY in 77 and went to Smith's for a job. Was explained to me by Mr Smith that he was phasing out the business and that he actually was going to terminate some, real soon. He was last using a V-8 engine, running on four and pumping with four. He did close soon after and the property was sold at public auction and became a mulch sales yard.
