Well - here's the 6V radio I put in. It's currently running off of (4) AA batteries, but I plan to wire it into the car's power at some point.
It's a Crosley CR-82; if you look, they turn up on ebay or etsy every so often, usually for around $20-$30. |
Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car This may be a little modern but would work http://www.ebay.ca/itm/vintage-car-r...p2056016.l4276

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car You can find a converter on fleabay that converts 6V to 12V for about $5.00. I bought one that was good for 18 watts.... that's 1.5 amps at 12 volts. If you are under that with your radio, you can use a 12 volt auto radio and it makes it pretty simple. I used mine for a 12 volt third brake light. Works great!

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car Yup, that old + and - stuff will get you! The ones I got weren't plug ins and I wired them directly into the circuit. Work great as long as you don't need more power than they will deliver. At 18 watts, you would need a small heat sink with the ones I used but you can find them with the heat sink included.

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car Model A sounds are much more pleasant than what's on the radio.

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car Consider using iHeartRadio on your smartphone and keeping the A unmolested by ugly wires. Or, download a bunch of CD's and listen to them.
Along those lines... this weekend I saw a Model A that had been wired up with a CB Radio, big whip antennae, cassette tape player and speakers -- all 80's vintage -- with nice 80's wood paneling. Some grandkids in the car did not know what those "vintage" devices were for. I had to explain. They just said, "whatever..." and pulled out their phones and ear buds. |
Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car When I bought my 29 p.u. It had a 6volt Chevy tube radio it worked great. The only thing I didn't like is they mounted the antena on the side of the truck cab. I would have hidden the antena !!!

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car A big problem with a radio in a model a is AM. There is a bunch of ignition noise. As mentioned a modern radio with a 6 to 12 v converter and a "hot Rod" hidden antenna that goes under the running boards will work.

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car Yes, radios in Model A's were common enough in the 1950's. I got mine from a 6 volt car from England - I forget the marque. The 6-volt radios from the VW beetle (aka "Bug") were used at least until my 1966). The radio housing itself, was under the seat. The antenna was either attached to the driver's outside cowl, or, as mine (and many others) - under the running board. The radio "Head" was attached to the steering column, with cables that ran down to the radio box under the seat.

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car Just finished wiring up my radio last night. Bought that power converter, turns +6 to -12. I'm using a brand new pioneer radio. The wiring is all hidden in the storage under the seats. It seems to work good so far.

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car I got an old pair of powered computer speakers that were 6 volt. I put them on the package tray and plug in my mp3 player. At events were they just don't look right, I undo two plugs and they are gone.

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car 1 Attachment(s)
I decided to just keep it simple. It gets AM/FM plus I can plug it into my computer and transfer a bunch of my 50's and 60's songs for replay any time I want to reminisce. :D

Re: Has Anyone Put A Radio In There 6 Volt Car I looked on Ebay and didn't see the 6VDC to 12VDC converter. Does anyone have a link to one?
