31 roadster hood help

:rolleyes:Hello guys , need a couple questions answered on the hood installation: 1st of all the hood is off the car and I am in the process of installing it , I bought the welt and looking at it I don't see how the bottom is fastened, I am assuming there are 3 screws along the top one in the middle and 1 on each side , the bottom just has 3 slots and I don't know what to do here.??2nd the hood will have to be sand blasted [ which I have] so is it a big deal to disassemble the hood?? blast it refinish it then reassemble it or should I leave it all together? any help is appreciated thanks THE HOOCH

Re: 31 roadster hood help

On my '31 roadster the welting had a metal hook riveted to each end that fit into a slot at the bottom of each side of the cowl...stand the hood up on its cowl end as it's steadier in that position, then dribble or spray a light oil, WD-40 for example, so that all the hidden parts of the hood hinge rods are lubricated and let it sit maybe over the day or night. Then using a drift pin lightly tap out the rods far enough so that you can clamp them in an electric drill and while spinning the drill motor pull back on the lubricated rods until they spin out of the hinges, having a significant other to help always comes in handy during this procedure to hold the hood while you use the drill. I wouldn't sand blast the hood panels for fear of stretching the metal, if they're stretched out of shape you'll never get the hood to hang correctly and it's critical the panels be straight for correct alignment, and of course you know to never lay the hood down in the folded position...good luck!

I would rivet one end and stick that in the middle notch, then pull the welting tight and mark where to rivet the other end for the middle notch. Pull it off and rivet the other end and stick both ends in the middle notches, then poke a screw hold for the top middle screw by using an awl. Run that screw in and do the same thing for the two side screws. A search of this site should turn up pictures of this.

I'm at French Lick and will try to take a lot of pictures in the next few days. These national meets are where you can get a lot of pictures and information.

Take the hood apart to get everything good and clean. The easiest way is to drive the rod out with a pin punch about 1" and then attach an electric drill to the exposed rod. A little oil on the rod and slow speed with the drill and pull on the rod as the drill rotates the rod. Out it should come without damaging the hood.

Good Luck: The Old Tinbasher
