original spark plug wrench
 

Looking for an original 1933 sparkplug wrench for 4 cylinder for engines. Any idea what number this item is. These plugs are larger diameter than the 8 cylinder models.

And it basically looks about like the V-8 one but with the 1 1/8 (I think) opening. Should be without Ford script, like other '32-3 tools. Easy to find since Ford made circa 5,000,000 of them, mostly scriptless and mostly of course for the Model A...number was changed to B prefix in '32. Don't throw away the V8 wrench, as most aftermarket A-B plugs used a smaller hex that fits the other wrench!

Hi, I just checked my collection of Ford tools and I have four of those wrenches. I probably don't need four of them. They all have the circle with the M in it for the manufacturer's mark, no Ford script, the 1 and 1/8th inch open end for the plugs, and approximately 3/4ths inch for the boxed end. The wrenches are approximately 10 inches long cast pieces with the bend up for the spark plug end and the bend down for the 3/4 inch box end. The only difference in each of these is a number in raised numerals on the back side of the wrench near the boxed end. The numbers are 44, 47, 52, and the number 4 which is smaller in size and a little further away from the boxed end than the other three numbers. I assume these are just casting numbers (but if they have significance I'd really like to know about it). PM me I'm sure I no longer need 4 of these. Hope this additional info helps. Toby

I have 2 of these, they both have B 17017 plus Ford script on the underside of the handle part.
Exactly the same as the Model A ones but most A items have no script or part #.
The V8 one marked 40-17017 looks somewhat different.

That is the correct number, should be 1 1/8" open end for plug with 11/16" head nut at other end. "Too small" is strange...1 1/8 is I believe biggest plug hex Ford ever used.

What size does it measure?? What do the plugs measure?

Hex on that wrench should be .6875 for 11/16, fits all 28-48 Fords head nuts except v-60...
Open end should be 1 1/8 for the original plugs. Most aftermarke A-B plugs are smaller hex than the originals, and most actually fit the '33 V8 wrench.
(head nuts 11/16, Ford book specs the hex wrench a tad loose at 45/64, still a lot smaller than you measure.) This is something odd, possibly modified?

And that should be too loose to actually use on the head nuts. Get another wrench...

It is a shame. I only bought this to use on the spark plugs. I would use a regular rachet set on the head bolts if needed. But I figured this would be the spark plug wrench. What the heck size spark plug rachet would i need for Ford 4 cylinder Model A spark plugs or Model B 4 cylinder plugs? I am so confused. All I want was a way to remove my plugs!

I'll have to measure one at home, but I think 1.125 plus a little slop would be right.
It should fit original Champion C4's (number from memory, might be rong), which as far as I know are biggest hex carb around for a-B Fords. Other brands and modern replacements are generally smaller, usually the size of '33 V8 wrench, a few are stock size, I have never encountered one with larger than stock hex.
Meanwhile, until you get a B-17017 wrench that is the size it is supposed to be, you can generally getemout using the Ford monkey wrench in your tool kit.
