Magnet wire coatings

Radioshack has 24 gage magnet wire for motors etc, but it is nylon coated not varnished. Is nylon OK? I want to rewind my horn and wiper for 12V.

Yes, but I find it a P.I.A. to clean off the insulation for soldering without nicking the wire. Doesn't flake/scrape away like enamel. Then again, you're not winding a hundred coils.

if you search on amazon.com you can find all sorts of magnet wire most with enamel coating. Radioshack doesn't have beans anymore in the DIY electrical department...

Nylon coated would be thicker then enamel would it not? The web site called out that this is hhok up wire and the assortment (that does not have 24ga) is called out for coils and electromagnets. Thicker insulation/wire might give problems with enough windings on the spool.

If it were me and since it is "web only" and not stocked in the stores I would look for the enamel stuff.

You can find any gauge wire you might need at McMaster Carr - I buy my magnet wire from them because they always have it in stock in anything I ever need.
