Sun visors for a 32 fordor Happy Monday!
I have a 1932 Fordor Deluxe & I haven't a clue about what the sun visors are suppose to look like. I looked in the 1392 Ford book but I didn't see any obvious photos or information. Mine are currently covered in fabric like the car seats, but I know that is incorrect. Can anyone tell me what the material of the sun visors are suppose to be & if I need new ones where to get them? Thank you Joanne |
Re: Sun visors for a 32 fordor Joanne,
Good to hear from you again. There were two types of sun visors. The early ones mounted in the center and the later (more common) ones mount at the ends. There was an ad for the early ones in the V8 Times a while back. I thing LeBaron Bonney, (800) 221-5408, carries the later ones. If you have the brackets you might be able to buy the visor only. The reproduction of the early one is in fiberglass and I have heard it is quite good. Due to budget constraints I have strongly considered making my own with masonite from Home Depot. It would be necessary to glue a couple of pieces together for the correct thickness. Try EBAY for photos. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1932-FORD-SU...26e338&vxp=mtr Charlie Stephens |
Re: Sun visors for a 32 fordor Thanks Charlie,
Trying to get the car finished & all of the other stuff going on just seems to take up lots of time these days. :) I have the old brackets. I guess my first step is to remove the fabric & see what is under the sun visors & maybe try to use what I have. What color are the visors suppose to be? Black I would imagine. :) Joanne |

Joanne,
If you have the center-mounted earlier version there are photos/illustrations of these on pages 11-31 and in the top three illustrations on page 18-9. Attached below are a couple of photos of the late, end-mounted visors. The former are made of pressed fiber board and the latter are cloth covered heavy cardboard. The center mounted visors were painted a gray/brown (sort of like milk chocolate), the same as their brackets. The end-mounted visors' cloth covering was basically the same color as the headlining. Which type of visor do you have? |
Re: Sun visors for a 32 fordor Hi Dave,
I have the sun visors that have center brackets. I didn't even think to take a photo when I was there last week, but I will send you a photo tomorrow when I go over to see the progress of the car. Joanne |

Hi guys,
OK now I am really confused! I have the cloth sun visors with the bracket in the middle & just the trim around the edge. So what am I supposed to have? the guys at the upholstery shop are working really fast & they will have the car done in no time!!!! I read the books & I think I have a hodgepodge of both maybe???:confused::confused: Can Dave or Charlie or Jim tell me what I need to do? Thank you Joanne |
Re: Sun visors for a 32 fordor Joanne,
It would seem that you have half of the center-mounted visor clamp and the heavy wire frame from the end-mounted type, just as you thought. You might be able to find the missing half of the center-mounted clamp (the half that is riveted to the pressed fiber board visor itself) with or without the visor intact or more likely the whole visor assembly. Without either modifying your existing header panel (inside over the windshield) or finding a late version of that panel that is compatible with the end-clamp type of visor, the wire frames that you have are basically worthless. In other words, you're more or less back to square one. You'll have to find a pair of originals (they turn up on ebay from time to time and there's always the "wanted" avenue here on the Barn's swap meet section and that of the Early V-8 Club) or go with the reproductions (which I have not seen, but perhaps others here have and can comment on them). The center-mounted type of visor is attached to the car's header panel with oval head slotted machine screws after the header panel is covered with upholstery and easily added to the car after all the upholstery work is done. So, don't be influenced by that deadline. |

Re: Sun visors for a 32 fordor Jonanne,
Please go to: http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/earlyvisor.htm for some excellent photos of a complete original early '32 visor such as your car had at one time. This is part of Vince Falter's "Ford Garage" web site which has lots of helpful photos and other informtion. When you compare what you have with that in Vince's photos, you'll know exactly what you're missing. |
Re: Sun visors for a 32 fordor Cool! Thank you Dave!
Frankly I don't know what I would do without this web site! |
