Tappet noise ?

Hi Guy's,

I had original A cam reground to the A-B Grind that the Model A New's did a story about year's ago (By Stipe's )

The Engine the cam was in was a original set up with the solid Ford lifter's...It was very quiet...I latter had the engine rebuilt & got double lock lifter's from the old Ford Obsolete..Installed them & no tappet noise,,,

Installed the new reground "A-B" cam & Tick, tick, tick,..Tried to reset the lash, made no difference...Had another reground cam in the box I never used. It had a round tip on the lobe Vs the original pointed tip...Out of Frustration I installed this other cam

It turned out to run nice & quiet...Which is what I wanted,,,With this cam I'am running the single lock tappet that I ran on the other cam that made the noise This tappet has the wide base...

So what gives ?? Must of been the grind..

"This tappet has the wide base..."

You answered your own question.
There is another thread ongoing right now about this same problem

Re: Tappet noise ?

what lash did you set it at? A regrind does not necessarily have the same lash as an original. Stipe's 330, for example, is set at .012 for both in and ex. Your regrind probably required a different lash than what you set.

Tbird,,

I ran the same tappet on both cam's,,,one ticked like "hell" the other is quiet..I thought I made that clear in the 4th paragraph..Pat,,I set the tappet's as Stipes called for .012

On this other regrind I set them to .10 & .013..Quiet as a mouse...Must of been the regrind on the other cam (Clicking)

Re: Tappet noise ?

The center cam main bearing is known to cause a noise that sounds
like a loose lifter. Did you measure the housing bore and both cams
too see what the clearance is? This should be done every time you
change cams...

Hi D J

The Cam had about 3-4 thou "wear"...The Cam I have in the Engine now is about the same... & No noise ?...Here's something I didn't know till recently The center cam Brg Is the only part of the A engine that has "Pressure". And that's the part that seemed to wear over the year's ??

I know what you are talking about the center cam brg making noise...This noise was Tappet sound's front & back of the engine, not just the center "Area"..This cam was a 28 five brg,,So it was stronger than the latter 3 brg as far as flexing..

I had it in a 28 block that was in the A when I got it year's ago...Like I said quiet as a mouse,,,& was running the original "Script lifter's"...

I sold the 28 block & the 28 cam that I had reground went with it...Never heardback how it rand ???

Thank's guy's for your help
