Re: Remember those that served!

While we should always remember and give thanks for those that serve,

Memorial Day is the day we go out of our way to praise and remember all those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country.

Veterans Day is the day we go out of our way to praise and remember all those that serve or have served.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, as its purpose was to visit cemeteries and place flowers on the graves of soldiers who had died in the Civil War. In 1882, people started calling it “Memorial Day,” and by the time World Wars I and II had ended, it had evolved into a day to honor all fallen military men and women, no matter what war they fought in.

Re: Remember those that served!

Good Morning,

On this holiday my thoughts and prayers of gratitude are with all those who have served our country. Though today's focus is on those who didn't return from battle, my message also carries a thanks to all who did return.

Honoring all who have served.

Dean

I fly the red, white and blue on my home 365 days a year for them.
I went to Abraham Lincoln Cemetary for a service today in Elwood, Illinois, to pay my respects.

Re: Remember those that served!

I feel the same as most of you guys. I fly the red-white and blue all days except when it's raining outside. I never served active, because of bad back. I did get the rank of U.S. Air Force Captain from the Air Force Auxiliary - Civil Air Patrol. (flew and taught aviation) It's not ha ha funny, but most of the younger people don't even know about or respect the W.W. II events. I always say thanks for your service to any W.W. II vet that I see out in the public wearing a VET cap.

Re: Remember those that served!

all of us idolize WWII vets, who sacrificed unbelievably under horrendous circumstances. less discussed are the servicemen in various ill-begotten conflicts that did not return and whose sacrifice accomplished -0-. Personally I feel the best way to honor all veterans is to try to avoid unnecessary adventurism and political blundering that puts future generations unnecessarily in harm's way.

In case I am the only WWII combat veteran on this site I thank you folks for your thoughtful and appreciated messages.. My Model A's did not venture out today as we have Memorial Day ceremonies, which I took part in, but no parades.

Thank you for your service. Would you mind sharing your experiences with us? Unfortunately as there are so few of you left, I try to ask for at least one memory from each WWII vet I met.

you have a great point. for some odd reason, we did not appreciate these guys until their numbers started dwindling. Most of us guys in our '60s had fathers who served but again, for some odd reason, we never asked many questions....I guess we were too close in time to the events to realize a historical perspective.

Barnstuf, We all thank you for your service and sacrifice. I've been thinking you and the all those I know who served in WWII today. You are all are indeed the greatest generation.
