Hooking up Alt. My Gen. locked up on the 31. I have a 6v pos. ground alt. from a old timers parts stash. Hooked it up on Batt. post. (far right in pic) and drove the car. Not charging. Nothing but discharge on gauge.
Should I try the other post? Thanks |
Re: Hooking up Alt. Wick,
I suggest that you find out if this alternator is designed to be a "single wire" type or if it needs a jumper wire between the two posts, or if it uses an external regulator. Do you have any documentation with it ? Marc |
Re: Hooking up Alt. I was told the owner would have taken it off of a Model A and replaced it with a gen. The pulley on it is the same as on the nu-rex. The far post had a paper tag that said battery. But that side dident work.

Re: Hooking up Alt. if it is a 1 wire , it takes a little rpm to excite it . if not , as above by marc

Re: Hooking up Alt. Could be you have been victimized like myself. Three years ago at Chickasha I bought an alternator that was still in the box looking brand new except for a little bit of grease where it mounted. The man said it was new and he ran it on his "A" but put his old generator back on to sell the car. He said he would take half what he gave for it. I bought it, got home, mounted it, but no charge no matter what rpm. I pulled it off, went to town and took it to a rebuilder where they put it on there test stand and I was told it was burned out. Still looking for that guy.

Re: Hooking up Alt. This appears to be an old Delco 12SI that was jury rigged to run an external 6V+ regulator. A second, insulated bushing and stud was added to the normally grounded negative side of the 6-diode bridge/heat sink. You now have an isolated ground alternator. Its been way too many years, but I think (Oh oh!) it was originally wired something like this:

Re: Hooking up Alt. does not look like a one wire. we have brand new ones on ebay.

Thanks |
Re: Hooking up Alt. Putting bearings in Gen.
Thanks Ha! Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. I laughed when I read those few words of wisdom . |
Re: Hooking up Alt. Wick,
I'll be happy to double check tomorrow for you. It may be a good alt. I'm getting old and if the residual magnetism has fallen off in the rotor you will need to excite it. If it is positive ground magnetizing the rotor is very different than a neg. ground system. That is what I need to double check. You may need to ground one of the stator taps to turn it on. |
Re: Hooking up Alt. Wick, the terminal with the red insulator should be the output.
|
Re: Hooking up Alt. The gen. is back on and working like it should. I will try the Alt. on the next motor.
Thanks all |
