1929 Rumble lid replacement I have a 1929 deck lid with many dents which are hard to get out, and I was considering replacing the outer skin with a reproduction skin. There are several compound curves in the original outer skin, and I don't know if the repros fit and look the same? Anybody done this, with good or bad outcomes?

Re: 1929 Rumble lid replacement Having dealt with a repro lid I would be much more tempted to carefully take apart the original metal, fix it and put it back together.
Though with a shrinking disk and proper metal working techniques (maybe some creative tool making too) you might be able to do a lot more then you think with it together. |
Re: 1929 Rumble lid replacement Yes I'd agree. I've used the repro deck lids and found them to be to flat in the crown anywhere from 1/4" - 1/2". Also the width's are not correct and you end up cutting the flanges off and moving them in to get a proper gap. Remember A/M means "Almost" fits.
Look for a good used one you'll be further ahead. The Old Tinbasher |
Re: 1929 Rumble lid replacement I used a Brookville lid and it fits great. Maybe I just got lucky but the crown, side gaps all fit very nice. I did use a Brookville lower panel and that also fit very nicely.

Re: 1929 Rumble lid replacement Used a Brookville deck lid on my 29 roadster and was very happy with the fit and quality. It was one of the repro sheet metal parts that required the least amount of work to get it right.

Re: 1929 Rumble lid replacement Thanks for the Info on the Brookville deck lids. May be a good option

Re: 1929 Rumble lid replacement I have a lot of body filler on my 29 coupe lid. But it is not a show car so for me, it works. I also had small dents that were fairly easy to fill with the filler and paint over them.

Re: 1929 Rumble lid replacement Use of a HIGH QUALITY filler, (AKA-"BONDO"), PROPERLY applied, is NOT a SIN!!
I always wonder how many BEAUTIFUL, FLAWLESS cars out there are hiding FILLERS under their many thousands of $$$$$$$$'s paint jobs??---LET'S GET REAL!! HEY, Flop, where are you BUDDY? Hope yo' TATOO healed up as good as my face surgery!---Bill W. |
