Small King Pin Felt I’m not quite getting the brake operating pin/small king pin felt install.
Les Andrews on this: Apply a small amount of grease on both ends of the operating pin and push it up thru the king pin. Place a felt dust washer in the backing plate hole for the operating pin. Wouldn’t it be easier to first thread the pin thru the felt and leave it at the lower end of the operating pin. Then, insert the operating pin into the king pin and “work” felt thru the backing plate hole and into the king pin with a “blunt little tool.” Should not that felt be positioned at the lower end of the operating pin? Am I missing something? Thanks Leo |
Re: Small King Pin Felt i find it easy to loosen the backing plate bolts to install the felt. some have mentioned trimming it thinner but i would rather use the full thickness of the felt

Re: Small King Pin Felt My brakes are all apart so I have lots of leeway with the backing plate.
But again, do you stuff the felt up thru the king pin after the operating pin is inserted? And should it sit at the lower end of the pin? |
Re: Small King Pin Felt the felt gets sandwiched behind the backing plate, then the pin gets pushed up through. it may be easier to push the pin up through the felt before completely tightening the plate up

Re: Small King Pin Felt OK time for a rookie question. Does the felt go between the BP and the spindle on the 'outside' or does it stay inside the BP area and get pushed into the little hole? I just pushed the pin through the felt and left it between the wedge and the BP inside the drum.
Mike Mitch you beat me to the answer. Is it going to cause a problem where it is at? |
Re: Small King Pin Felt From the backing plate backside you should see the felt sandwiched between the backing plate and bottom of the king pin. I grease the brake push rod and push it up through the backing plate, felt and kingpin. I have had to thin a couple to make them fit. I used a razor blade to make them half the thickness.

Re: Small King Pin Felt 2 Attachment(s)
Well now I’m about as confused as a fart in a fan factory.
I learned club member suggested that I first stuff the felt into the kingpin, assemble the backing plate and then insert the rod. Two things about that bug me.
Tom is the pictured scenario close to your idea? |
Re: Small King Pin Felt you have it correct it is sandwiched between the backing plate and the lower part of the spindle.

Re: Small King Pin Felt I just grease the felt, push the pin through, add a dab of grease to the top of the pin, install in the king pin, then install the backing plate.
