She runs!!! Well, Friday evening after work I fired off my little 39 221. I set the distributor as close to where it was before the build, filled the fuel bowl and hit the starter, she came to life instantly! I ran her just long enough to get heat in the heads without water(aprox 1 1/2 minutes) and to see that I had good oil pressure and that no oil was leaking. Shut it down and let her sit while me the guys from the shop went out for a celebratory beer. Came back after she cooled down, re torqued the heads, filled her up with water and ran her for a couple more minutes looking for leaks and listening for unusual noises. I took the advice of a few of you and installed some mufflers on an old set of headers, sure helped a bunch! No noises, no leaks and good oil pressure! And I doesnt have more than five minuted on the run stand. I can now instal her in the car with no worries, button everything up and drive her to break it in without having to putz with the carb, timing etc..
It sure is a great feeling to have built my first Flat Head! And one with floating bearings. I would like to thank Ol Ron (great book) Walt, JWL, Pete and many others who have helped me with this build over the past few months. |
