Re: 1940 ford

No experience with an 8" rim, but I have 7" rims on the rear of mine. They worked well with P225/70R15 tires, no scrubbing, etc. I changed to 235/75r15 and they work well most of the time. I get some slight rubbing against the inner fenders on an uneven approach to a steep incline.

So I will hazard to say that IF your tires don't overhang the sides of the rims by an inordinate amount AND if you have the correct backspacing they will work.

Eights are too wide. You can use 7's or 6's, but if using the stock shocks you may have a problem with the tires rubbing the shock arms and tearing up the inside of the tire.

I didn't mention-I have tube shocks on the above example

Too wide. Remember an 8 inch rim actually measures as 9 in. wide edge to edge. Then when you add the width of the tire it's even greater.

On a '40 with a stock rear end still in the car, a 5-1/2" wide 15" F1 wheel with a 225-75 tire gets very close to the spring hanger.

Very good point. The distance from the spring hanger to the tire on my stock 40 is rear about 7/8 inch. The shackles are home made but are the same length as the originals. Tires are 7:60x15 on 15 x 6 (total width of 7 in) 15 inch rims with 4 inch back space. I found that the largest rim you can comfortably use is a 15x6 with 4 inch backspace. The red thing at the top is a brake drum retainer.

I use a 7" rim in the rear of my 39 std. coupe. I have 235R70X16 tires. Like 40 cpe, they only rub on turns into driveways. I have no rear shocks at this time, and no sway bar in the rear. No way would an 8" rim work for me

Thanks for the replies, I will go with a 6" and see if that will be alright

I have 8" wide 15" rims on my '39 with 225-70 tires. Only .25" clearance between the spring and the wheel.
