new transmission gears

I am rebuilding my transmission, and I am wondering about the quality of the new gears on the market? Need to replace the top shaft, first, and second gears and all the bearings. Thanks.

Re: new transmission gears

I assume when you say top shaft you mean the input shaft (main shaft)?
The gears sold by the suppliers from my experience are of good quality. Make sure they state made in USA. Stay away from any offshore stuff. I recently replaced my input only and it worked well with no abnormal problems or noises.
I also use the one sided sealed bearings ( debatable topic like oil) and the shafts with the orings.

Re: new transmission gears

My shafts and gears were made in Denmark, very high quality. I took the shift tower off at 2000 miles and they aren't even scratched. Got them from Mike's.

Re: new transmission gears

back in 1969 I bought all the gears, shafts, bearings, etc for my first Model A restoration at a local Model A parts vendor for $80. My impression at the time was Wow, that's a lot of money to spend on a Model A. I still have that car and the trans. operates perfect.

Re: new transmission gears

I bought a Mitchell sychronized transmission and sent them the case minus the internals. The gears look perfect. If some one is interested I would sell all for $150

Hi Growley Bear...
I am quite surprised that there is such a thing made in Denmark ... I know much is being done out of quality on all machined thing ..Have never heard about making Gears for Model A. But are you able to remember where in Denmark they are made and what the company name was ..?

Per,

Per,

I asked the vendor before I bought them and that is what I was told. I figured that parts made in Denmark had to be of high quality.
I don't know where in Denmark though.

Re: new transmission gears

I rebuilt my transmission a couple years ago and bought a new USA made input shaft/main gear, new cluster gear, and a new low reverse gear. I also replaced all the bearings and the idler and cluster shafts with the o-ring ones. I kept my idler gear and 2nd/high gear since they were in good shape. I don't have enough experience with other model A's or NOS gears to know if mine makes any more noise than normal but it seems to work great in my experience (about 2,000 miles). Naturally if you can find all NOS gears that's the way to go but its going to be extra time or money and maybe both. If you can find good original gears your mileage may vary if you're mixing ones with different amounts of wear. Of course I did this too by mixing my new gears with my used 2nd/high gear and reverse idler but all seems ok. I stuck with the USA made gears and visually they looked well made and a good fit and visually near identical to the originals they replaced. The one (out of two) sliding gears I replaced fit just right on my output shaft and wasn't too tight or two loose and I had no issues with the cluster gear or main shaft either. I don't feel that its too noisy and it doesn't slip out of gear at any time.

Re: new transmission gears

A couple of years ago, I bought one of those new Model A transmissions from Mikes that were made in Denmark. It would jump out of 3rd gear when on compression. Called them and they sent me another Denmark replacement. After a lot of work again, same thing - jumped out of 3rd gear still. Removed it again and rebuilt my original transmission - works fine. Lots of work and $700 wasted. I don't like to knock a vendor, but the post was asking. Inspect your gears for condition and maybe you will only have to replace shafts, bearings and seals.

Re: new transmission gears

I knew a guy that replaced his tranny gears because he thought the pointed teeth meant they were shot. This is the pointed ends on the teeth that helps them to slide together easier.

Re: new transmission gears

I see the all new transmission from Mike's is under $600. I think these are made in Denmark.
