Modern Bendix Installation I just ordered a modern Bendix. I was told by the vendor I could not install it without buying a tool which costs almost as much as the Bendix. Is this true? Or, how do I install it without a special tool. Thanks.

Re: Modern Bendix Installation You need to have a starter with a bare shaft and woodruf key.
You will get a modern style bendix. You have to push down on the spring loaded collar to tighten the set screw. I didn't need a special tool. May be handy to have a second set of hands helping, though. |

Re: Modern Bendix Installation Please let us know the outcome of procedure. I am getting ready to do the same in the near future.

Re: Modern Bendix Installation I bought the tool when I installed my new modern Bendix on our '29 Leatherback as I converted it to 12v negative ground. The tool's nice...no doubt...and makes the job pretty easy for one person to do it. But...with another helper, you could do it yourself.
A word of caution...this is not a job for someone like your wife unless she's got some strength in her hands. The return spring is not really strong, but it's strong enough to take some strength to hold it back while you tighten the set screw. A neighor may be willing to help...ask around. Just my opinion... :) |
Re: Modern Bendix Installation I installed mine myself without any problem. Maybe there are different kinds of modern bendix.

Re: Modern Bendix Installation As I recall I used a bench vice to pull the spring back. If you were going to do a lot of them the tool would be nice.
