Clutch Well my Labor Day Weekend trip to Michigan ended in bust as I lost the clutch in Indiana. Had to flatbed the coupe home and take the Jeep up. Got to see him at least. Heading back home tomorrow and plan on pulling the motor and tranny this weekend. I will be posting questions...
I was in Merriville, Indiana coming up on a stoplight. I pushed in on the clutch and something popped and it went to the floor. I thought linkage but after pulling the floorboard I could see the shaft turning so it's inside the bellhousing. Oh well, I had a good summer with it anyway. |
Re: Clutch Since the clutch pedal can always go to the floor, do you mean all of a sudden it went without much pressure? Have you removed the small cover on top to see how far forward the T/O bearing moves the 6 clutch fingers?
My first guess was a crack in the arm on the end of the clutch shaft, which would keep the 6 fingers from fully releasing. |
Re: Clutch Check the trunion. These like to break. I'm redoing clutch linkage and internals on a car right now. The flywheel housing bolts to the block were on finger tight. The safety wire was keeping them in place. Looks like the bendix failed, and was replaced, but nothing else was fixed. I'd like to know the history on this car. Even the pedals need rebushing. Let's hope your problem is external. Bob

Re: Clutch I had a simular problem. The tappered pin in the throw-out fork was sheared. Check the Service Bullitens.

Re: Clutch Years ago I pushed the clutch pedal on an engine on an engine stand and sheered the fork pin. Lucky I wasn't on the road.

Re: Clutch The pedal had resistance as I pushed it in and then it gave way and went right to the floor as though something broke. I will say it was getting weaker as I entered Indiana. I'm heading home from Dad's place in Michigan to Illinois today and hope to dig through it this weekend. I'll repost the findings...
