Clutch
 

Wonder how many miles does a Model A clutch last before it has to be replaced? I know it all depends on many factors but just curious if anyone has an idea. I have a truck that shows 5100 on the (working) odometer but I doubt this is the correct mileage. The pedal shafts have practically no slop and the steering is like new but the clutch is about all out of adjustment. The truck is too nice to have over a hundred thousand miles so I'm wondering why the clutch is worn out.

Clutch arms can crack and give the linkage a lot of extra play. Also the trunion can get deep slots worn into it, which makes for slop in the linkage. Pull the top cover and look at the 6 fingers on the clutch pressure plate. Where do they rest? They should be 11/16" (+ or - 1/16") from the rear surface of the opening. As the disc wears out the fingers will get closer to the opening of the pressure plate. A picture of the 6 fingers would help us to determine condition of the disc.

Here's a picture of the last one I did, just before the tranny was installed. If you replace the disc, I learned the hard way that you ALWAYS want to slide it on and off the input shaft of the tranny first to make sure it slides easily. I then give the tranny input shaft splines a light coat of grease.

Here are two tools I made to make the adjustment easy. The first tool is just a piece of aluminum channel with a bolt and nut which can be adjusted to the correct distance.

The second tool I made is similar but has two magnets to hold it to the cover and the adjustment bolt has an insulated contact to sound a buzzer when the correct arm height is reached. I like this tool because you can use both hands to hold the wrench and screwdriver while adjusting the arms.
