Spring perch problem
 

I was taking the rear brake assemblies off to go through them before putting the rearend back under my truck. On inspection of the over all assembly here's what in saw. This is the left rear perch. Do I need to get it welded or can I use some J B Weld?

Very hard to weld cast. You have to heat the whole piece in sand, and get it hot, 400.

Now think real hard; you, your family, your friends & loved ones, are going to be going 40-50 miles per hour down a highway in this. You're willing to have the piece holding the whole thing together to be some plastic out of a tube?

I would defer to an expert welder, not some guy like me with a MIG. But also someone with experience in 80 year old metal restoration.

It's forged 3140 steel and can be TIG welded easily.

Thanks everyone! I have talked to James and it looks like I'll be taking a trip to his neck of the woods very soon!

agree it is forged and can be TIGed or MIGed nicely. I do it all the time. If cast they would have broke apart long ago...

They are definitely forged as the perch is originally welded from the factory. Weld, ream, then finish hone to size, good to go.
