2 Questions:
A) who sells a ring gear that stays on w/o pinning?
B) anyone know the month the ring gear article was published, in the Restorer, I think?

Happen to have a copy on my desk.
The ring gear used for the article was off another flywheel.

Are you using 12 volts on the 6 volt starter?
Does the ring gear bevel face the rear of the car?
I have yet to come across a slipping ring gear.

I use 6vdc starter on 12vdc & never have had a problem .

This is replacing a worn out gear. I had a friend who's gear was working off. I also read an older post mentioning it. So no one has bought one recently that has worked loose after a while?

No comebacks with the current ring gears we have installed.
Was the gear heated then installed or just pounded on?

Where the ring gear sits on the flywheel there is a slight ridge to keep the ring gear from moving off the flywheel, if the old ring gear is just beat off the flywheel this ridge can be damaged, I will make a cut part way through the gear or drill a couple of small holes then use a chisel to break the gear, then it can be removed easy without damaging the flywheel.

When heating a ring gear without having a ring gear heater only heat the inside, keep the torch away from the gear teeth, keep the torch moving, you don't want to make the gear red hot(making the teeth red hot will make them soft and they will wear quick, if you arn't happy with the fit and worry about movement drill a small hole 1/2 on the ring gear,1/2 on the flywheel and tap threads part way down and use set screws, by screwing the setscrews in to the partially cut threads they will jam and lock it all together

There are currently 2 starter/flywheel ring gears being made at this time. One works every time, and one works sometimes. Snyders is making the good one. Several other vendors are selling the other one (since it costs a couple bucks less). Hard to tell them apart, but if you buy one, make sure it is the Snyders one. We have sold, used and installed hundreds of the good ones, and several of the bad ones and worse part about the bad ones is they sometimes are too loose, and sometimes are too tight and sometimes just right.

Does it help to quench a hot ring gear immediately after it is on??? I always do that.
