Belt rail on Cabriolet

I have removed belt rail to be re done, under belt rail was a black tar paper type material, I would think in this day and age a black silicone caulk would seal better....any thoughts...Dick

Just anti squeak. Basically a cloth tape. Way too easy to get some new tape and use it. No mess, just stick it on and you are done.

It's best to avoid ANY caulking that contains silicone. It promotes corrosion on steel. If you did feel the need to seal it, dum-dum strip caulking would be the best and most appropriate material for that type of application in my opinion.

I would have expected friction tape. In either case it's primarily an anti-squeak. Any type of caulking alone would be insufficient for that purpose.

Thank you for suggestions, I will use some type of cloth tape, just finished the wood work and am ready to start mounting with new screw/bolts....it is a exact copy of original wood and it fits perfectly...but is solid white oak...going to be nice to tack to when I reach that point, if I live long enough...ha ha Dick
