Polarizing the generator
 

The generator I have has sat for 20+ years, question I have since the truck is positive ground, I assume to polarize the generator, I jump from the neg side of the battery to the field terminal on the generator?

I've done this once before on a GM generator but used Positive, but assume it was because I was neg ground.

Figured I ought to ask first:)

Remove the wire from the F terminal on the regulator. Briefly touch it to the B terminal. Should see a spark. Reconnect and you are set to go.

This means I need to wire the regulator in first then in order to do it like that, will fire up the shop heater and wait for a reply:)

Thanks...got too late...

But in effect, can't I just ground the back of the regulator, and run a wire from - battery to the field?

I think that would be the same?

Basically it is the same thing. It reinergizes the field pole shoes as magnets for positive earth systems (gets the north & south magnetic poles where they should be). You have to make certain that your generator case is grounded to the positive terminal of the battery. and the field is flashed to the negative post. It doesn't take but a quick zap to get some magnetization going there.

The field shoes don't hold the magnetic gauss if they set too many years and they have to have that magnetic flux field in order generate enough electricity to pull the cutout switch pole in the regulator closed to get the system charging.

I do it at the generator, just cause on the A V8 it's easier... The idea is to disconnect the gen from the reg, and flash the field coils on the gen. I use the pos end on the ignition coil, right next to it...

AND, this would be about the last thing to do before the first start up...
