Exhaust Manifold Was Glowing a Little

Finally got my Model A to stop backfiring and I was feeling pretty good. I got out to look and listen to the engine and bask in my glory when I noticed the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe clamping area beginning to start glowing orange/red a little. Of course I immediately shut it down.

What's going wrong? What do I need to fix or adjust? Thanks.

Generally it's due to the timing being too far retarded and the fuel mixture too lean. The timing is usually the bigger issue. That is why the vast majority of original exhaust manifolds have a droop at the rear port.

Agreed. I learned the same lesson this time last year. We advanced the timing just a bit and she ran beautifully ever since. I took a photo of my glowing red muffler just to remind myself of how little I know.
