Engine numbers on rebuilts

When replacing the engine, how do you deal with having the correct engine number? Simply grind the pad and re-stamp? I have stamps but not the correct style. Can you get correct stamps and the star? I don't suppose the rebuilder would do it? How about legal and judging issues?

The car is registered to the number currently on the motor and is still running, but I was hoping to avoid the delay of sending that one to be rebuilt. I have several good "core" engines to use.

I would send the original engine out and have it rebuilt. Another option would be to take the car to the DMV and ask them if they could assign an ID plate to the door jam since you are going to exchange the engine. That would work in California (at least it used to). As far as the original stamps go check to see of your local Model A club has a set in the tools they loan.

I've seen the numbers on a block milled off and stamped again. I think when it comes down to it. If the state gets their money. They are ok.

I have not lifted the body to check the frame number. The existing engine has been in there a long time.

Mine has a date stamped where the engine number should be 6 9 1946.
Yes I'm rolling a very old rebuild:)

Mine is like that and was inspected by the state when brought in from Louisiana to match the title.
