insurance advice?

My Grundy insurance expired somehow before I caught it, so it would be a good time to change carriers if I want to. Thinking of going with Hagerty--haven't heard anything bad about them and I do appreciate how they seem to support our meets. Before Grundy, I used Taylor. Never had a claim with either of those, so have no basis for judgment. Anybody know any reason to not go with Hagerty?

My understanding is that all three carriers are about the same as far as their restrictions against using the car for other than club events, etc.

Thanks!

Steve

I haven't used Hagerty but I did turn a towing claim in to Grundy and had a check within a week.

I have to agree with you the way Hagerty supports the hobby.

I shopped insurance extensively. Went with Hagerty. Mainly because they offer the guaranteed flatbed towing with no out of pocket, and because they do allow use of the car for the occasional trip to the store, out to dinner, etc. They just don't want you using it for work.

Another thing that wonders me is, how is the "modified" vs. "stock" classification handled? Does a 5.9 head make it modified? How about electronic ignition, or overdrive?

Hagerty will insure a modified car. As for changing the head or ignition type, I don't think that's on the radar. Adding an overdrive is common these days, I doubt they would consider that modified either. Just call them and ask, they'll take your phone call and they are happy to answer questions.

Steve, one thing that Hagerty does that may or may not happen with the other carriers is they allow coverage for vehicles under restoration. I know that even though the insurance on my 4 cars was purchased through Hagerty, my cards actually say Essentia Insurance Co, ...which I suspect is just underwriting Hagerty.

Re: insurance advice?

Maybe I am lucky, but I am 55 years old and have been buying all kinds of insurance for a long time. Other than my health insurance, I have never had one single claim for anything, ever. Auto, boat, homeowners etc. A very good deal for the insurance company.
For the past 10 years I have had broadform liability auto insurance only. This covers me for any car I drive for liability only. My modern cars are only worth a few thousand dollars each so are not worth paying anything more. Some of my 10 antique cars are worth a bit more but they are kept garaged, driven very little and then very carefully.
So basically I self insure. The money I save on premiums and put into other investments (at least so far) could cover me if took a 10K hit by losing a collector car.
Theoretically if ones collector car was destroyed in an accident that was not your fault the other guys insurance would cover it. (Of course the 20% of drivers that are not insured cause 40% of the accidents so a lot of times you would never collect....)
Just my two cents worth, so far it has worked for me, it may not be right for others....

Re: insurance advice?

I've had hagerty for a while now. Fortunately I've never had to put a claim in. The only time I've dealt with them is for towing or concierge service. The towing is free for the first 10 miles or the next package I think covers 50 miles. The only issue that ever came up was after restoring my Impala I needed it towed to the exhaust shop and then to the alignment shop after that and they would not do it. I explained I didn't mind paying the mileage amount I went over but they said they still would not do it. I still used the same tow guy anyway but in a private transaction with the tow company. The poor guy drove all the way back to his shop ( a good 35 miles away) and had to do a complete turn around to come pick me back up. But I stayed with them. The concierge is good also. I've used that once. They will locate parts for you nation wide if you can't find it yourself.

Brent nails it....

If you ever need to pull your car apart, it is covered with Hagerty. Not so with most other carriers. I have always had JC and am considering the switch.

I have coverage from Barrett-Jackson. They have few restrictions on mileage, out of state or country travel, and the rates are great. You set the value of the car and pay accordingly. I have always wanted to take a trip around Lake Superior and many of the insurance companies don't cover travel into Canada. Also, they cover my daughter driving the Model As. She started driving them, legally at 16, a couple of years ago. Most of the other insurance carriers don't allow drivers under 25.

I use Hagerty on both my rigs. Have not had any claims yet but the costs for the insurance is very reasonable for both rigs.

I use Hagerty for all my cars. Coverage for tools and spare parts are also included in your coverage. I also have the towing and it covers all the cars you own....not just the classics that are insured.

Re: insurance advice?

I have had Grundy for several years, and there are very few restrictions....mostly not for using for work. Regular driving and touring are fully covered.
