New guy from Oklahoma Hey everyone,
My name is Cory and I wanted to introduce myself. I'm currently restoring a 1929 Model A Coupe. My grandfather bought the car a few years back to restore it, but his health went down and I promised him that I would restore it since he is not able too. I hope you guys don't mind answering a few guestions. :) Thanks for all the future help! |

I'm not part of any club. Does that have something to do with the forum? I know it's not a business coupe. How would I be able to tell if it's a standard, sport, or a special? |

Re: New guy from Oklahoma Welcome Cory! Good luck with your restoration! I inherited my grandfathers 31 coupe a few years ago and have been working on mine also. My grandfather painted the car and put an interior in his a number of years ago but his health also kept him from completing the car mechanically. He was able to drive it on the rural dirt roads around his place but the car was not safe or reliable enough for the area I live in since the brakes hardly worked at all and everything was worn from the engine to the trans, rear end, suspension and wiring.
I cannot stress how valuable joining a local model A club can be. I joined my local model A club and it has been a great time socially meeting new friends and they have helped me out in many ways with expertise, parts, motivation and help with jobs or tools I don't have the experience or resources for. This summer I took my Model A on an 800 mile road trip to the MAFCA Northwest Regional Meet in Bend, OR and even drove it up the steep and windy roads to the Mt. St. Helens overlook on windy ridge. It thrilled me to imagine what my grandfather would have thought of me driving the car further than he ever dreamed and it worked great. I hope you have as much fun with your Model A as I have and good luck with the work! |

I agree with what montanafordman says about clubs. While this site is GREAT little beats the hands on of those that have done the work before. |

Re: New guy from Oklahoma One more thing, don't forget to pick up a copy of the red Model A handbook shop manual by Les Andrews and the Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards. The red book will help with mechanical repairs and the Restoration Guidelines and Judging standards will help with assembly and finding the correct parts and finishes for your car. Some people scoff at the well intentioned sugesstion to buy the judging standards and want to just "do it their way" or say it wont be judged - which is fine and id say most people dont have their car judged but i enjoy reading them and the pictures help too with assembly questions like "does the cotter pin or bolt face to the left, or the right?" It has an index in each chapter that will identify every nut and bolt on the car and tell whether its cad plated, unfinished, or painted black, painted body color etc. The RG&JS will also go a long way in finding and identifying the correct parts for your car. While many things will interchange between model A years there are subtle differences and several variations of parts and components and if you need something and hit up ebay, the ford barn classifieds, or the swap meet its nice to know what you are looking for and get the the most correct or best part for your car. Its you and your grandpa's car but the more details you adhere too will add value to your car also and can be a fun step in the restoration process.

Welcome. You can restore these cars with a minimum of prior knowledge and still have them be FUN and LOOK GOOD...that's why I like 'em.
If you want to go all out they can be a real treasure too... My previous experience was a $100 VW Bug. I was able to go from this...To this... |

Tons of info, easy to understand and PICTURES for boneheads like me ( I love the old cars but am a retired carpenter so them mechanics make me crazy sometimes!)Join a club, make some pals(The old guys in particular) ask a lot of questions and have a ball.
