Speedometer lube

When taking the speedometer apart to clean and put new numbers on what kind of oil or grease should I use to lube the shaves and gears with? One of my speedometers bound up and twisted the cable into on a Stewart Warner oval face.

Re: Speedometer lube

I squirt some oil down the outside housing and then push the cable in as it runs through some grease in the palm of my hand. Smooth as silk 12 years later.

Do you have any suggestions in the inside of the speedo?

Re: Speedometer lube

I use a couple drops of oil and some grease on the bevel gears under the oval plate, and a drop of oil on each of the shaft bushings inside the housing.
I haven't worked on any round speedometers.

Grasp the base of the speedo where the cable goes in with your thumb and forefinger and turn the shaft. The shaft should turn easily, if not, you will twist off another cable.
Soak light oil into the shaft bushings with speedo upside down. Not too much oil.
