waterpump fan removal
 

I have to replace the fan on my water pump due to the mismatched taper on the fan/shaft (caused a few scratches on radiator). It has a 4 blade fan and who ever had it off last replaced the studs with bolts. Can I remove the pump without removing/loosening the radiator? I understand that a 2 blade fan can be removed if studs have been replaced but how about a 4 blade fan?
Am going to install a 2 blade fan.

Save some time and remove the radiator first. While you have the waterpump easily accessable pull it. your impeller may have walked backwards, toward the engine. there is a reason the fan is too close to the radiator. find out why and correct it. Bob

If you loosen and detach the 2 radiator rods at the radiator side and remove the upper hose you should be able to pull the radiator forward enough to remove the fan and pump together. Just worked for me on my '29 Coupe.

Do you have studs or bolts holding on the pump?

If you have bolts as you indicated you should be able to follow the directions given. Mine had a four blade (plastic) fan with studs in the head and I simply moved the radiator toward the light bar. Stuck a piece of cardboard and removed the whole assy.
It's tight, Worked for me. BTW I went two a two bladed fan.

Pull the radiator forward and bend the blades backwards and the water pump will come right out, then switch over to a 2 blade fan.

If the 4 blade is going to " go away" after you replace it with the 2 blade, save yourself a lot of time. Take a hack saw or sawzall and cut off the 4 blades.( I put a sheet or 2 of cardboard against the inside of the radiator first.) With no blades on the hub you can ease it off the water pump by loosening the 2 brace rods and moving the radiator forward a bit. Loosen the 4 bolts and the pump should come off too. I did this about 2 months ago after I found out that the fan hub and pump body were touching. Quite a loud screetch. Be sure your 2 blade hub and the pump casting are clear when the fan IS BOLTED to the pump shaft. It is a job you don't want to do twice.
