1933 5W Door Check Strap

Any advice on what type of Door Check Strap is needed for a Late 33 5W? I believe 3 or 4 different types exist per the vintage auto part catalogs.

Its a strap like a T ,some are poor quality it needs to be solid type from Macs or Drake

Like Ted said its made of ribbed rubber 10 1/8" long with a "T" piece across one end which is 2 1/2" across. Original ford ones had a spring steel strip moulded inside the rubber. Most repros don't have the spring steel strip inside them and are useless. I think the BOB DRAKE ones are the only straps which have this metal inside them. Drakes part number is B-162592 (kit of two with clamp brackets). Other types listed in catalogs are made from webbing or metal and are not original to your ford. Regards, Kevin.

The Drake ones do not have the metal traps in them and are to soft. They just fold in two and the edges are sharp. The Vintique ones are stiffer and edge has a slight chamfer .I have found they work the best.

Hi deuce lover, well that's interesting because I have a new vintique strap fresh out of its plastic bag and it is so soft you can tie a knot in it, not kidding !! I fitted one to my 34 and it just bends up and jams in the door. It has no markings on at all. I have 4 new Drake straps and they are a little thicker and as you say have squared edges. They are also more stiff than the Vintique and marked DRAKE MADE IN USA B-162592. I also have some original used ford straps marked "F" (for firestone). These are very very stiff and hard to bend. I grabbed a strong magnet and ran it all over every strap. All straps attracted the magnet only along the "T" across the strap end and NOT along the strap itself. DRAKE actually advertises his straps as having metal and cloth moulded into the rubber. The Vintique straps you have must be different to mine. The drake ones work OK in my 34 sedan. SignLadie I hope the Drake ones work OK for you. Also good luck with your Dad and that 34 coupe. You will have a ball driving it and great pride owning the best looking ford ever built. (My opinion anyway). Best regards, Kevin.

Go to the current thread Meet the model 40 guys on picture 154 the third picture down , the 33 sedan on the interior shot you will see how the check strap is sticking out into the interior .That's a example of the floppy ones, I also have some old stock vintique (I think )and Macs ones they are both good and stiff enough to use ,I used the Vintique one to replace a soft floppy example .just as described .

Kevin,The last pair of straps I got from Drake(2 yrs ago) were so wimpy that I gave them away.Previous to that the ones I used in my old 35 roadster (2006) were soft also and when I would shut the door they would fold up and get pinched in the jamb.I tried soap and dry lubricant to make them slide easier but no luck.I ended finding a NOS pair and switched them out.I know Bob personally and mentioned that problem.Maybe they fixed the problem and added a stiffener.
