Rust In Gas Tank

I've got a 1930 Model A that I inherited and I wanted to check everything out real good before I tried to start the engine. It belonged to my cousin and a friend told me that he last saw it run a little over a year ago.
Anyway, there is visible flaky rust in the gas tank. I did a search on the forum and have been reading through some old threads. I'm going to use a shop magnet on a stick and get what I can see first and then I thought I would try flushing several times with a rust remover.
I've found references to two particular chemicals and I was wondering if anyone had an opinion as to which would work better: Evapo-Rust or Esprit from Rustdepot.com?
Thanks,,,

Re: Rust In Gas Tank

Could what you see be old dried gas/ethanol deposits?

Don't suck fumes through a vacuum cleaner, but if it's totally dried out then I'd try sucking out what you could first, then try flushing.

I have had great luck with evapo-rust but not in a tank.

Henry, My Man, welcome to the Barn. The Dog:cool: tole me to tole you, (DANG! now I'm spellin' like the DOG:cool:) that whatever way you clean your tank, be SURE to add that stainless, skinny filter in the top of your fuel valve. It saves a lot of GRIEF!

Re: Rust In Gas Tank

Tom, looks like it could be a combo of both. What do you think?
Bill, I have added the filter to my list I'm making for Mike's up in Maysville Ga.

Here are some pictures I took. Rust is definitely sticking to the magnet:

many of the model a parts houses sell a ssmall stand pipe that slides right into your gas tank valve . This is a tube with a stainless steel screen on it that allows you to suck gas from a higher point than the valve intake ,, thus the rust settles in the bottom of the tank and good gas flows through the screened tube ,,, pretty cool huh ????

Re: Rust In Gas Tank

That kind of looks like old, 70's and 80's pre-ethanol gas tank sealer to me that has probably been dissolved or partially dissolved back to metal by our modern day wonder-gas. The whiteish, tan looking stuff. I cleaned tons of it out of my Model T gas tank (and carb bowl) once I finally figured out what it was. Just my guess.

SETHDOUG, Dog:cool: here, YEP! thet filter's COOL & it does an amazing job! Ol' Bill's seen tanks wurse than Henry's that get along O.K. with that filter, he's nevur seen one plug up. Ol' Bill sez that the only thing that gets through is a RUST colored stuff that feels like talcum powder, BUT it never seems to plug up stuff in the carbunator.:D
Once in awhile, Ol' Bill gives his choke goody a HARD pull at about 2500 RPM jist to make sure all the jets & stuff ur flowing free, cuz sometimes guys say thet "CRAP GAS" can cause GUMMY-GOO deposits in the ITTY-BITTY jets & stuff, but we ain't had NO-PROBLEMO with ethanol, even in the MOWLAWNER! don
they all sell them ,this is off the tams site... if your not running it you should be.....its listed under gas tank
it does not necessarily allow the gas to be sucked at a different height as it slips into the shut off and the screen is level with the tank bottom

Re: Rust In Gas Tank

It's a great help to get catalogs from MANY of the reputable suppliers. They contain exploded views, tips & tricks, specifications & thousands of parts. When I get a NEW issue, I scan each page to see what's available & usually spot something I missed in the past. It's also a way to compare different supplier's PRICES! Somebody's always calling, "Bill, where can I get BLOBBDY, BLOB, part"?-----"Look in yo' catalog. You DO read, don't you"?? Bill W.
