1929 Coupe Rear Wheel Carrier

I probably don't even need to ask... but is this rear wheel carrier a repro?

1929 Sport Coupe.

Did all the rear wheel carriers use pressed lugs and normal lug nuts? Not removable bolts, right? The RG&JS illustration seems to suggest this but it does not specify.

Re: 1929 Coupe Rear Wheel Carrier

Ray,
I have several rear spare tire carriers for 28 and 29 coupes, roadsters, and tudors/phaetons. I have never seen one with lug stud holes like in your picture. All of mine have square holes and the studs are peen into place or swedged in place. I don't know if you have a repro carrier or someone somehow modified the carrier you have. It appears your mounting holes are threaded for a special threaded bolts like you show in the picture. I don't believe Ford used anything like that on model A's, but I could be wrong.

you've got a 30 spare tire holder on a 29
all the holes have been drilled out
the top one on the body should be a bolt from the inside ,with the end of the bolt flush with the face of the bracket
its original ,bit not for your car and its destroyed as far as originality

heres two originals
one is on the car (1930)
see how the bottom lip conforms to the bead on the 30
I may have erred on yours as I cant see how it conforms to the bottom that well
now look at the last photos and see how the top bolt comes from the inside and is flush with the face
also note how the bottom flange is nearly smooth, as the 28-29s and all cabriolets don't have that bead at the bottom
this is the one you should have

Re: 1929 Coupe Rear Wheel Carrier

Thank you, Tom. This is perfect. Photo's helped, especially with the lugs that match the RG&JS illustration.

I'm learning that my car is a repro playground. But I love the car and try not to think about it too much -- just drive. But still... I wish the car were more original. Maybe that's just a quirky personality flaw. Bert's will have a replacement.
