modern shocks in a roadster Has anyone fitted modern shocks to a 32 to 34 Roadster if so what was the result and what brand/ type??

Re: modern shocks in a roadster I have Bob Drake gas shocks on the front of a 5-W and original rebuilt shocks on the rear. I am looking at going to the original shocks on the front. Radial tires may be a much better choice for a ride that doesn't change with every bump like the bias plys do.

Re: modern shocks in a roadster Do you mean gas filled shocks ? If so, not recommended. If you have the Tardel & Bishop book on traditional Ford Hot Rods, they talk about the drawbacks to the modern shock for that type car. They recommend the early Volkswagen shock. I have them, front & rear, on a '29A roadster on an original '32 frame. They are just right for a light car. If you want the suppliers or part numbers, I can dig them up for you.

Re: modern shocks in a roadster Ride quality is also determined by spring weight and un-sprung weight. The weight of the rear axle determines the ride quality. The heavier the rear the poor the ride.

Re: modern shocks in a roadster Fitted the Pete & Jakes ones [Kit] to my 35 Pick up. After fitting the improvement was huge.. Cornering didnt feel like the running boards are scrapin', I hit the freeway and was doing 70 MPH and I didnt know !
The old lever shocks were cactus.. My good friend Nev said he uses the VW ones. |
