1928/29 or 1930/31 headlights a difference?

Hi,

I have a mid 1928 Tudor. I want to replace the headlight buckets/shells as the ones on the car have been painted black several times. Is there a difference between 1928 headlights and 1930/31 headlights? I have seen many original 1930 headlight buckets for sale but never see any listed as 1928/29.

Thanks
REB

Yes 28/9 are the same. 30/31 are the same. there is a small transition period where 28/29 show up on early 30 pickups and AAs

The 28-9 are teardrop shaped and the 30-1 are half round shape, or hemisphere. The 30-1 are stainless and last much longer than the nickel plated steel of 28-9.

Also, your 1928 should have one bulb and fluted lens as well as no markings on the buckets. Good original 28's are pretty hard to find.

There is a definate difference between the '28-9 and the '30-31 car headlights. The 30-31 lights are a bright stainless steel, and the '28-9 lights are a nickel plated steel. There is a difference in the shape, too. The '30-1 lights are rounder in the back.
You just might have the correct lights on your car, and the extra paint could be preserving them.
Go to a Car-Show and ask some questions of the owners.

Took me a while to find the correct lights for mine, which is an early 29, but I eventually found one on e-bay. If you keep watch there you will find a pair of decent lights in time - I was looking for "patina" to match the original car and was less fussy...

Yes, go down to your local hardware store and buy some paint remover. Follow the instructions. Perhaps, you will find the correct headlights, underneith. They should look like the headlight, that Mark W. pictured.
