29 roadster seat back upholstery

Is the seatback upholstery attached to the wooden rail where the top is attached or wrapped around the springs in front of the wooden rail?

Open pickup looks fine ... i have no knowledge for the Roadster. As for details, attaching a photo of original seat (provided to me by Mr. Neil Wilson). However, the 'original' top on the Open Pickup was permanently tacked to the tack board, not removable.

Where are the 29 roadster experts out there?

I'm certainly no expert! The seat back fabric on my '28 roadster is attached to the wood top rail. I don't. Know how the roadster pickup seat

My Open (and Closed) Cab seats Charles showed are not quite like the Roadster.

I don't have pics handy of a '29 Roadster I've done but the construction is identical to a 35-A Phaeton.

http://abarnyard.com/temp/35-a/35a-10.jpg

There is a two layer "extra" flap sewn into the cover. The lower layer is just heavy weight muslin.

http://abarnyard.com/temp/35-a/35a-09.jpg

http://abarnyard.com/temp/35-a/35a-11.jpg

After the cushion assembly as shown is mounted into the body, the muslin layer is drawn back tacked to the wooden tack rail. A thin layer of padding is placed over the muslin to provid a padded base for the top flap which is then drawn over the rail and tacked just above the steel body.

Now, LB (and probably others) Don't or can't make it quite correctly so they sew the flap so instead of the welting following the corner of the cushion, they have the welting and flap pull straight across the top and over the wooden tack rail.

Re: 29 roadster seat back upholstery

Yes, the upholstery is wrapped around the wood rail and attached to the back part of the beltrail. Once you install the seatback you can't easily remove it as it is permanently attached. The top for the roadster goes over the seatback I just described. I might have some pictures of how the seatback is attached, but it is a pain to post pictures here. My email is: [email protected].

Re: 29 roadster seat back upholstery

I can confirm the above with my 29. Seat back upholstery is fastened to the tack rail at the top of the backrest. Seat back can be flipped up but not removed. There are 2 pointed clips that hold the seat back spring in place. They are fastened to the wood frame at the bottom. The spring structure slides ( with difficulty) into them and is held in place. It is also difficult to get the seat back un-clipped from these fittings.
