Rechrome rear bumper cost

Looking for the approximate cost to have rear bumper rechromed, on 29 Tudor and if you did do the riveted plates have to be removed?

Not sure about a '29 Tudor, but a '30 (front) will run $200 at Bert's.

I had my '29 Fordor and Tudor rear bumpers replated without taking the rivets out. Once plated, the forward sction of the assembly is painted black so any plating problems on or around the rivets can be hidden. Gar Williams

I had Paul's Chrome in P.A. do mine [4 full bumper bars] .They only triple plate. $300.00 per bar. Ask for Bill if he is still there?

Do you want it done right?

The original bumper plating was with a dull nickel plating. It was buffed on the face leaving a dull silver on the back. The bumper was then chrome plated.

Most shops will either say that was never done in dull nickel or just will not attempt it. Bright nickel is much easier to do.

Personally I would not use Pauls after they ruined some of my parts. They do not pay attention to detail and never read my instructions, TWICE. I wanted hand work and wanted to pay for hand work on my top irons, instead it came back ground down like a sword and the hinge did not fold. Basic stuff like two parts that have to fit together when done that still did not work the second time I sent them back. Paul's has not have good luck with plating over the dull nickel so they will not do it. I eventually got usable parts after spending $2000.

Frankfort plating in Philadelphia can do the dull nickel and appears to do some good work based on what I have seen. The owner was happy to take me around the shop and let me look at anything they were plating.

That statement is most likely true. I recently priced out having a grill re chromed for my '41 Cadillac and the asking price was $5,000! I looked and waited and found one that was very decent for $450.

E.P.A. regulations have gotten so strict that it has shut down most of the places that offered chrome plating. I bought my last set of bumpers from Smith and Jones in Columbia South Carolina. These bumpers are reproduction and match original in every way that I can see. They have the correct arch, measure the correct length and the back side is dull finish as original. I have a set of rechromed original bumpers from Berts and other rechromed bumpers from other sources to compare to and the Smith and Jones bumpers in my opinion measure up in every way. These bumpers had a one year warranty and cost $150.00 front or back, this was in 05 and I am purdy sure that they have gone up. It is my understanding that all reproduction bumpers are NOT created equal. Good luck

I'm pretty sure that the new bumpers are polished stainless steel. They won't rust but are not spring steel so if bent will not return to their original shape. They also look more like nickle than chrome.

There are two styles of reproduction bumpers. The stainless steel version is more expensive and is not spring steel. The chrome plated bumpers that I bought from Smith and Jones are spring steel. They also offer the stainless steel version. Just for the record I believe that most of the repro 30-31 spring steel front bumpers are 60 inches long as used for late 30 through 31. The stainless 30-31 front bumpers are 61 1/2 inches and similar in length to the bumpers that were used in the begining of 1930 until August 30 that were 62 1/8 inch in length. I have no experience with the 28-29 bumpers.

Thanks for all the help.
With the bumper ends as rusted and as they are I think I will try new and go from there.

Todd , I purchased new front and rear bumpers for a customer car from Macs and was surprised as to the quality of the chrome plating . I have worked on antique cars for years and feel the bumpers are good quality. Macs sell the bumpers in kit form and the are very reasonable.

Please don't start with the politics. We are all here for the Model A's. But, we don't all agree on politics. Your statement is a really fast way to get this thread closed.

Todd in PA-if you have more plating to do, try Librandi's in Middletown,PA near Harrisburg. They seem to have a good rep. I got a '31 SS front bumper from Mac's and was really please with the quality, but i wasn't looking for a perfect match to an original bumper.
