Oil Filler Tube. Latest baffle design.

What was the configuration of the tube baffles, in the latest oil filler tube produced?:)

No matter what design you have they work better when stuffed with steel wool.

I can't find a picture but the last (Late 1931) had 3 separate baffels

Default Re: baffling loss of oil UPDATE

Judging Standards page 1-3 has a picture of the first 3 versions

Additional info:
If you remove the breather pipe, invert it and look at the end. If you see a piece of steel baffle the runs across the inside of the tube, bisecting the pipe and even with the bottom of the pipe, then you have one of the first two versions that did not work too well.

If there is no metal baffle bisecting the pipe and the angled baffle is about 1 or 1 1/2 inches above the bottom then that is the later design pipe.

One of the Old Style tubes is pictured here:

Maybe the owner of this new engine just removed the breather tube from his first engine that also was destroyed by the clogged breather and installed the clogged breather on his new engine.

It should be noted that none of these three breather tube versions solved the problem.

I agree totally with James Rogers' statement.

1. Water plus steel wool equals rust with small pieces of steel wool dropping into the oil pan.

2. Then engine vibrations cause additional pieces of unrusted steel wool to break off and drop into oil pan.

An old sock over the cap and pipe keeps the oil from blowing around the left side of the engine, otherwise if you have too much blowby use a road draft tube, or fix the blowby.

One of these days, when I can finally find out how to post a picture on this thing, I will post a photo of how to permanently solve this problem for all years of the Model A engine. It consists of a simple breather installed in the valve chamber cover exiting to the intake bore of the carburetor, much like a flame arrestor on a marine engine. Burping oil when filling the engine, belching oil when running at high speeds, condensation in the crankcase, excessive heat buildup in the crankcase, and blowby air pollution all disappear with the installation of this simple little device. It will be no good on a dirty motor in need of rebuilding, however.

Steel wool ! NoNoNoNo! You can do what you like, it's your's. I don't want those little fibers in my oil.

I install a couple piece of screen and It seems to help, but, I've not had much of a problem anyway and the engine was done in 1961.

ford tried 3 times to fix the blow by problem with out any luck so he finally just gave up LOL, the best solution i found for my A was to install one of the breather tubes with the long flex pipe down along side the back of engine to let the oil and stuff drip on the ground instead of on the fire wall, not a blow by fix pre say but it keeps my engine and fire wall clean

I'll have to agree with that. My temporary engine came with a flex hose leading down past the splash pan and my engine stayed clean. Last fall I removed it and put the regular cap on the oil fill pipe. Now I have a light oil mist on the left side of the engine and firewall. That's OK, as oil prevents rust.:D
